REDOX Oxidation and Reduction Reactions
Specific Learning Outcomes • Define the terms oxidation, reduction, oxidant, oxidising agent, reluctant, reducing agent, spectator ion. • Carry put a series of reactions to illustrate oxidation and reduction. • Write balanced half-equations and full equations for a range of redox reactions. • Recognise and identify the colour of a range of oxidants and reductants and any associated colour changes.
Redox Basics • An oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is any reaction involving the transfer of electrons. • In all redox reactions, oxidation and reduction occur at the same time. • Oxidation is the loss of electrons and Reduction is a gain in electrons. • Oxidising agents (oxidants) are themselves reduced, reducing agents (reductants) are themselves oxidised.
