The reactant whose oxidation # goes up is oxidized (lost e-s) • The reactant whose oxidation # goes down is reduced (gained e-) The oxidizing agent = the substance reduced Thereducing agent = the substance oxidized
Balancing redox reactions **Must balance the atoms AND the charges** • Have to know whether the reaction takes place in an acidic or basic solution • Balance the ½ reactions then add together for the overall reaction Balance the following redox reactions: 1.
