A Little Bit More About the Artist • About Edvard Munch: Edvard Munch grew up in Norway's capital, Oslo, then called Christiania. His father, Christian Munch — brother of the well-known historian P.A. Munch — was a deeply religious military doctor earning a modest income. His wife, who was 20 years, died of tuberculosis when Edvard was only five years old, and Edvard's older sister, Sophie, died of the disease at the age of 15. Edvard himself was often ill. A younger sister was diagnosed with mental illness at an early age. Of the five siblings only one, Andreas, ever married, only to die a few months after the wedding. His childhood home was his art, Edvard Munch turned again and again to the memory of illness, death and grief.
Now, a Little Bit About the Painting • What is the name of the artwork? The name of the artwork is very unique and different, "The Scream” • What year was it created? The year this magnificent artwork was created was in 1893. • But now, many styles have occurred, let me show you what I am talking about.
What is the Subject of the Artwork? • What is the subject of this artwork? This picture to me drips pure emotion. Munch's own personal despair went into this painting. The loneliness of the figure and the violent swirling colors seem to jump off the painting in a dramatic, aggressive attack.
What is the Subject of the Artwork? • In a note in his diary Munch described his inspiration for the image this: • "I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature."
Portrait, Landscape or Still-life? • I think The Scream is portrait. I think this because in the picture there is a person, also because it is right side up.
The Medium • The medium Edvard Munch used was Oil paint on canvas; also woodcuts.
Why Did I Pick This Artwork? • Well, this is a really supernatural, strange in a simpler way word, story. It all started last year, in Mrs. Rimmer’s room; you know when you walk in a new room, you tend to look around, well that’s what I did. I was looking around and, poof something shoots my eye, it was ”The Scream”. Ever since that day, I kept looking at it, it was exceedingly, exceptionally, extraordinarily, tremendously, immensely limited and unrepeatable.

Edvard Munch Quotes • A person himself believes that all the other portraits are good likenesses except the one of himself. • By painting colors and lines and forms seen in quickened mood I was seeking to make this mood vibrate as a phonograph does. This was the origin of the paintings in The Frieze of Life. • Death is pitch-dark, but colors are light. • To be a painter, one must work with rays of Disease, insanity, and death were the angels that attended my cradle, and since then have followed me throughout my life. • For as long as I can remember I have suffered from a deep feeling of anxiety which I have tried to express in my art. - Edvard Munch
