  1. Things Fall Apart: F 1/14 Discussion of chapters 21 & 22. Note-taking assignment. Reading chapters 23, 24 and 25. Response to the ending – TONE and MOOD HOMEWORK: Response to the ending. Remember glossary tomorrow.

  2. STARTER You should do this individually. 2 people should discuss chapter 21, and 2 discuss chapter 22. Note ONE important point about the chapter – it can be related to language, theme, characterization, plot or even a question. You must relate this point to a quotation. i.e. Chapter 20: Achebe uses Igbo language as a means of lionizing the culture, and assigning respect to it. “Does the white man understand our custom about land?” “How can he when he does not even speak our tongue?”

  3. IMPORTANT CONCEPTS Ch 21: What is the significance of the name of the missionary MrBROWN? Okonkwo’s power in the clan is diminishing, despite his misapprehension that he would take “the highest title of all the land” Why does Mr. Brown want the children to go to school? Ch 22: Mr. Smith – “He saw things as black and white” – IRONY Significance of his name - sterotype Character foil to Mr. Brown 200 to 250 cowries – prevalence of corruption What does the fire symbolize here? Cleansing idea. Again, use of snake to represent divergent beliefs.

  4. IMPORTANT CONCEPTS Ch 23: Power of the interpreter – language and knowledge is important. Highlights vulnerability. Why does Okonkwo desire violence? Ch 24 Why does he kill the messenger? Self-preservation? Why is he left to fight ALONE? Toad jumping in daylight? Reference to dead rathers. What is the meaning of Eneke the bird? “the men of Umuofia were merged into the mute backcloth of trees” Ch25 Obierika’s flash of anger. How much power / respect does O have in the end? Relate this to his father. “Their love of superfluous words” “The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger

  5. TONE and MOOD TONE:THIS CHANGES!! The author’s attitude about the subject at hand. When describing tone, you are describing the writer Objective Humorous Pessimistic Angry Informal Playful Cheerful Ironic Pompous Horror Light Sad Serious Formal Resigned Suspicious Gloomy Optimistic Witty MOOD: THIS DEFINITELY CHANGES!! the emotional atmosphere of a text When describing mood, you are describing the “feel” of the writing Fanciful Melancholy Frightening Mysterious Frustrating Romantic Gloomy Sentimental Happy Sorrowful Joyful Suspenseful YOU WORK OUT TONE AND MOOD BY ANALYZING THE DICTION, IMAGERY, SETTING, DIALOGUE, PLOT ETC. How would you describe Achebe’s TONE at the end of the novel? What is the MOOD in chapter 25?

  6. PLENARY Explain how Okonwko’s tragic flaw is both beneficial and destructive for him. Give evidence for this. Is Okonkwo a hero or a coward in the end?

  7. Extended Essay 4,000 words – you’ve GOTTA be interested! It’s a RESEARCH paper – lots of reading. You need TERMINOLOGY associated with the subject It’s YOUR project – indulge your interests! If you hate English…don’t do an EE in it! You have to answer a question…so it needs a question and a conclusion! Must be analytical. Make it fabulous.
