Consultative: UTSA Listens Program • Implemented this Semester through Student Affairs and Student Government • Designed to get feedback on what has led to students’ academic success • Designed to get feedback on what has been an obstacle to students’ academic success
Consultative: UTSA Listens Program • Getting to campus can be a major obstacle • 93/94 Bus Route Removal has become a barrier to many downtown campus students • Time spent finding parking spaces negatively impacting time spent in classroom
Consultative: Transportation Surveys • 2,834 Students Responded to Survey • 1,634 Students who responded that they ride the UTSA Shuttles
Consultative: Transportation Surveys • Have you ever had to wait for another shuttle bus due to your bus being filled to capacity? • 1,238 answered yes • 76.1% of students riding the shuttles • Have you ever been delayed to a class waiting for another bus due to your scheduled bus being filled to capacity? • 1,016 answered yes • 62.5% of students riding the shuttles
Comprehensive: Transportations Effect on Education • Provides access to the UTSA campus • Provides access supplemental educational programs (i.e. Thomas Rivera Center, Supplemental Instruction)
Comprehensive: Transportations Effect on Education • This committee needs a well rounded approach to increasing graduation and retention rates • To get UTSA’s 4 year graduation rate to 25% by 2021 we will need to re-evaluate all possible alternatives • Transportation is a piece of the broader puzzle for improving graduation rates
Open and Transparent • Student Government Sponsored a Student Transportation Referendum • 65% of Students in Favor • About 1200 students voting
Open and Transparent Student Referendum for Transportation $40 – 2012/2013 Fall, Spring, and Summer $42 – 2014/2015 $44 – 2016/2017 (Fee currently at $20/semester)
Frugal • The UTSA Shuttle system helps to keep the costs of education low • Parking permit price: about $130 for surface spaces • Garage permit price: over $600 per permit
Frugal: Transportation Fee Cost Comparison • UT-Austin: $156 per year (≈ 50,000 Students) • Texas State University: $195 (≈ 32,572 Students) • Texas A&M: $210 per year (≈49,000 Students)
