“Accountability breeds response-ability” - Stephen R. Covey Accountability Academic Refresher Training “ You don’t chose the day you enter the world and you don’t choose the day you leave. It’s what you do in between that makes all the difference.” - Anita Septimus
Defining Accountability • “ An obligation or willingness to accept responsibility.” • Webster’s Dictionary • “We” Accountability: the Test Center operates as a team. We have a group identity and have group accountability • “Me” Accountability: as an individual, as an employee, there are tasks and expectations of me and my work performance. I MUST be held accountable for what I do incorrectly AND must be acknowledged for my success
No man needs sympathy because he has to work, because he has a burden to carry. Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Theodore Roosevelt
Accountability findings • Self • Clear Expectations • Empowerment • Consequences • Presentation by Marsha E. Jackson, “Communication for Improved Performance”- Leading Edge Leadership Program
Self and Accountability • Do I pay close attention to detail? • Do I double check my work? • Do I communicate effectively with my co-workers? • Do I need training to help me better perform my job assignments and tasks? • I hold you to high standards- not because I’m being mean or unreasonable, but because I believe we can do it and I believe that we can be better than we already are. So hold yourself to a very high standard- ‘cause you can do it! • Do I try my best? • Do I spend my time at work effectively? • Do I see myself as a team member? Could others rely on me to do what I am supposed to do or promise to do? • Do I accept responsibility if I make a mistake or do not complete my assigned task? • Do I demonstrate an understanding of the Academic Policies and Procedures?
Clear expectations • Available Resources to Help Establish Clear Expectations • The Team Test Center website • E-mail correspondence • Face-to-face discussions • Training PowerPoint presentations and manuals • Feedback and request feature on the Team Test Center website • The high standard applies to me as well and the following is why: • I cannot hold front desk staff accountable if the policies and procedures are not clear; expectations are not defined; and support is not available
Empowerment • Confidence in skills • Consistent enforcement of policies and procedures • Group feedback in problem solving and streamlining • Team concept • Equal distribution of work • Communication • Let me know what I need to do to provide the opportunity for the sense of empowerment to take over! • “Here at work we’re all just trying to get a job done. My people have the confidence of their convictions and they know their skills. And that occupies most of my time.” –Bill Gates
“It is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities.” –Sir Josiah Stamp
Holding others accountable • Hints for holding others accountable • 1. Check yourself before your wreck yourself • 2. Be comforting and reassuring- not confrontational • 3. See it as a learning opportunity, not a chance to criticize or demoralize • 4. Be direct- clear expectations about what should be done • 5. Be mindful of differences in personalities and communication style- and discuss in a manner appropriate to the individual • 6. Consider the big picture- where we are trying to go and whether confronting the individual falls into the ultimate goal
Understand this • Fault • Mistakes happen • Unclear expectations and changing policies and procedures
My accountability commitment • Create training- ANY KIND YOU WANT • Create training for FACULTY and/or STUDENTS • Provide support and resources • Be available for questions and clarification • THE BOTTOM LINE: I WILL GO TO BAT FOR YOU 100% IF YOU DEMONSTRATE TO ME THAT YOU ARE GIVING A 100% EFFORT
Academic accountability challenge • No excuses • No defensiveness • More awareness- self and team • Double check • Provide feedback • Ask for help
