İskenderun, alsoIskenderon (formerlyknown in thewest as Alexandretta, fromGreek Ἀλεξανδρέττα; in Arabic الإسكندرون, al-Iskandarūn), is a districtanditscenter in theTurkishprovince of Hatay. It is a growingcitywithmetropolitanaspectsandsurpassingtheprovinceseat of Antakya in population. It is located on theMediterraneancoast on theeponymousGulf of İskenderun at thefoot of the Nur Mountains (AmanosMountains) in the far southeast of Turkey, and has a population of 159,149 (2000 census).
