  1. Magazine Case Study

  2. The use of a puff here is effective, as it blends well yet still stands out against the colour scheme of the front cover. It attracts the eye but not too much to unfocused your eyes on what else is going on, The magazine company name ‘NME’ and the artist used on the front cover, Lana Del Ray is visible ‘above the fold.’ Front Cover The way in which Lana Del Rays legs and shadow ‘bleeds’ of the page is effective, as by doing this it allows the cover to focus only just on them, there is ‘no room’ for anyone else on it. ‘Rolling Stone’ is always in a fixed location, this being along the top of the front cover. By it always being in the same location on the magazine it allows the consumer to recognise it as well if a frequent buyer this is what the reader will look for. ‘Inside story on modern day icon’ is the callout. This gives the consumer an idea on what the main article is about inside as well as linking in with the image of the artist used on the front. The column inch is effectively used down both left and right hand side of the cover and the way that it only just overlaps the mid shot of the image of Lana Del Ray on the front cover. The use of different fonts sizes and fonts allows you to draw your eye to the most important news of what's inside this issue as well as creating the different contrast against the black and white image. The way in which the magazine Rolling Stone has kept to 3 colours is effective as it allows certain things to stand out. It also gives a sense of sophistication towards it. The words Lana Del Rey in capitals is the ‘Hook’ it informs instantly on who the issues main focus is on if uncertain on who the image is of.

  3. Contents Page The way in which the colour scheme has carried on through the contest page is effective and sophisticated. It connects it to the front cover so it doesn't look like a completely different magazine. Having a section on the left with a special offer or information on the edition is a good way of advertising in the magazine. The colours all work well together and they don't clash. The whole magazine flows when going to different pages. The way this certain section is outlined in a black rim shows its importance as well as the bold yellow box standing out within this box adds a new colours and links back to its importance. The same fonts have been used as well which again links back to the front cover and connecting to it. I like the way in which the subheadings for each section of the magazine stand out and are in red capitals compared to the information on what's inside the magazine. Also the use of lines to space out the different sections. This is effective as well as important as it gives the reader a clear option of where everything is. Having the titles and small bits of information on each article is a good and effective way of informing the reader of what's inside without giving too much away before reading the whole article.

  4. Double Page Spread The use of a image being the size of one side of the page spread is effective as it isn't just an article on the person, it allows you to have a visual image of who the person is. I might use this when making my page spread as its effective especially for the genre of music I am doing because people might not of heard of the bands and artists featured in my magazine as they ‘re up coming and not ‘famous.’ The use of three columns works well as it doesn’t look cluttered or messy and is simple to read. The way it goes around the quotation in the centre of the right hand side of the spread is effective and is still easy to follow through the text. The font used is easy to read and is a good size, its not too big or too small. The amount of text is good as well because its not over powering to the eye. Having text over the images also works well because its either informing you of what the photographs about or about the person/people featured in it. The colour scheme used works well together as they have stuck to three simple colours, this being orange, white and black. The colours in both photographs featured on the double page spread are edited to fit in with the scheme. The clothing in which the person is wearing is coloured to match the scheme as well as the props used i.e.. the beer in his hands

  5. Modes of Address

  6. Photography in Rolling Stone Photographs in and throughout the Rolling Stone issues have a retro, vintage style too them. The way in which the colours and contrast of the photographs give it the old fashioned look. They fit with the theme and style that Rolling Stone portray. Nowadays vintage is more in and images are taken and edited to be this way, its almost as if we are going back in time however Rolling Stone never came forward yet still a worldwide best selling magazine. Rolling Stone cover both men and women however back when it first started it mainly covered males, and it wouldn't be as common to see photographs of female artists and iconic figures compared to nowadays where the majority of people see women as equal to men. A range of composition is used, this being the camera angles and lighting in order to get the perfect shot. When photographing bands they tend to be a mid shot however when a solo artist they are more of a close up. The use of different settings can either relate to the article or seem to be completely random yet still work.

  7. Design and Layout - Rolling Stone has a simple and sophisticated look to it. The way it is edited gives it the vintage/retro look needed to suit the genre of music it supports. - There isn't very much advertisement which gives it the sophistication. - The way the photographs are used to link with the text/articles throughout the magazine allows you to have a visual of what's being spoken about.
