Digging deep into… Spelling! • 1st Lesson: Contractions • CONTRACTIONS are… words that have been shortened by leaving out some of the letters. • An apostrophe is used to show that the letters have been left out (won't - will not), (o'clock - of the clock), (are not – aren’t), (can not – can’t). • Other examples?
Tips and hints! The first word does not change. A letter or letters are taken out of the second word. The apostrophe usually takes the place of whatever letter has been dropped. Could + not = couldn’t Would + not = wouldn’t Are + not = aren’t I + am = I’m She + is = she’s
