Jackson-Reading Park Stream Bank Restoration Christian Miller Auburn University Marine Extension & Research Center Alabama Water Resources Conference Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 Orange Beach, AL
Eight Mile Creek Watershed • Urbanized • Impaired • Pathogens • CWMP
Jackson-Reading Park • Passive park • Land donated to City by Jackson family • Small first order stream • Trib to Eight Mile Creek • Stormwater impacts • NFWF Five Star
The Plan Pilot implementation project for the Eight Mile Creek Watershed Plan: undertaking actions for improved environmental health. • Key issues • Highly urbanized watershed • Two impaired (pathogens) stream segments • Economically limited and underserved community • Major Objectives • Restoration of 350 linear feet of degraded stream • Establishment of an educational site for managing riparian zones in urban areas • Capacity building of a fledgling grassroots environmental group
Planning • Survey current conditions • Priority 2/3 • Desired Condition • Stable, functioning stream • Water features & flood plain • Native vegetation promoting stability and habitat • A creek people can access and learn from
Looking Forward • City of Prichard will maintain the site and community volunteers will monitor the stream • Opportunities exist to build on capacity created by this project to work on similar restoration efforts in this watershed • Lessons learned • Moving dirt during the rainy season is a bad idea • Know your limitations and who to ask for help
Take Home • Project would not have been possible without partners • Pilot implementation project for WMP • Builds capacity in a underserved community Partners • National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (Funder) • Mobile Bay National Estuary Program • Coastal Alabama Clean Water Partnership • Auburn University • City of Prichard, Public Works • ADEM • Mobile Baykeeper • Prichard Environmental Restorative Keepers
