  1. Basic Soccer Clinics for Under 4 to Under 10 groups “An Introduction to the World’s Greatest Game” Presented by

  2. Meeting the children’s needs The children are more important than the activities in which they are engaged. The game is NOT the focus, the child is.

  3. The Goal of Mini Soccer … The GOAL of Mini soccer is to meet the the children’s needs 11-a-side soccer does not meet these needs Children require a modified game that suits them Research shows playing mini and small sided soccer: Children have more fun, are more active participants, they learn the fundamentals of the game better and develop more technical aspects of the game

  4. If the children are to enjoy and take part in soccer, they need to: Be able to take part, whatever their ability Take an active part in the game Learn to play as a team Understand the laws Develop soccer skills Feel successful Develop wellness And HAVE FUN !!!

  5. The Coaches Role Learn the kids first names early Plan a parent’s meeting early (avoid during “field time”) Make eye contact (take a knee) Use a calm voice, kids follow your lead Focus on the effort not the results Work on individual skills more than team tactics Avoid “lines”, play games where possible Maximize touches on the ball…do everything with a ball Explain games/drills quickly, too complicated and you will lose them! Safety Ensure no child is left at the field (the coach is the last to leave) Fair Play…house league, everyone plays equal Stronger players don’t dominate the game (3-pass rule) Goalie rotation The team that has the most fun wins the game

  6. The Field of Play Dimensions Youth Soccer Recommendation: Varies with age groups Field Markings: Distinctive lines about (10) centimeters wide. A halfway line shall be marked out across the field. A center circle with a three (3) meters radius. Four corner arcs each with a half (1/2) meter radius.   Goal area: No goal area will be used for this age group.

  7. Player’s/Parent’s responsibilities Bring water (with child’s name on bottle) Don’t leave your child unattended Unless coach asks for assistance, kids are yours for the next hour Proper equipment (cleats preferred, shin pads with socks covering), no jewelry Ensure every child has a ball (size 3 for U4-8, size 4 U10-12) Good Sportsmanship Don’t discuss/focus on score Try your best

  8. Typical “night” at the field Come prepared, plan in advance for practice Avoid lines, use stations where possible The 1st two sessions are “full” 1 hour practice After that each night is combination of practice and game (time varies depending on age group) Quick warm-up and stretch then work on one skill (U8-10) Pick 2 “captains” to go to center for coin toss Give them a goal for the half (# of shots, passes etc) Have line-up ready and rotate each week who starts (keep a book) If possible have an assistant “run shifts” while you coach LOTS of positive encouragement At half time stress what they’re doing well End of game shake hands with other team and referee (properly)

  9. “The Game” The game is played with 6 players plus a keeper at a time The game starts at center with one team having the “kick-off” At the kick-off the ball must move forward (normally one player will make a short pass to another player to start). At the kick-off the other team must be 3M away from the ball until it’s touched Substitutions can be made with referee approval on stoppage of play (ball out of bounds) Referee (if applicable) will call hand balls, ball out of bounds, goals If a hand ball or other foul (i.e. pushing) occurs the referee will award a free-kick to the team that was fouled During a free kick the team not taking the kick must be at least 3M away from the ball

  10. “The Game” Offsides There are no offsides in U4-U6 An offside occurs when there is no defending player between “you” and the goalie when the ball is played to “you” There is no offside in your own half There is no offside on a throw-in Throw-in Awarded when the ball goes out the sidelines U4-U6 does a “kick-in” instead of a throw-in Must have both feet on the ground Ball comes from behind the head with two hands Ball is released once in front of the head

  11. “The Game” Goal Kick Awarded when the offensive team plays the ball across the end/goal line but not in the net The ball is placed on the ground, not moving and kicked forward U4-U6 ball is placed just out from the goal U8 and up goal is placed at the edge of the goalie area Corner Kick Awarded when the defensive team plays the ball out the end/goal line but not in the net Not at the U4-U6 level Taken from the corner closest to the side of the net that it went out

  12. Teach them the skills of the game but more importantly teach them the LOVE of the game. All you have to do is have FUN !!!
