I should put a picture here… Finding and Using Images from the Internet Anne Huffman
Where should I start? • Licensed resources from the Dykes Library databases list • http://library.kumc.edu/databases/dbinfo.htm • Images,MD • AccessMedicine
Why do we pay for licensed image databases? • Safe use of proprietary content • Quality • Trust • Often packaged with other tools or content: Search, user account, save, export,… For you
Graphics in Books or Journals • Images , Tables, Graphs, Figures in textbooks or journal papers. • Contact publisher to identify owner and seek permission.
Public (Free) Images • Popular content sites • Creators have agreed to share royalty-free • “Some rights-reserved” approach • Easy
Images on the Web • Isn’t everything on Google free? • Check for copyright permissions • Some are clearly identified and others are not • Assume restricted unless stated otherwise • Google
Guidelines for Using Images • Find an image with clearly stated terms of use that you can meet • Determine use for teaching versus publishing • Attach the URL for future reference • Match the image size to its use • Cite the owner of the image and the permission agreement
Images and your document: some suggestions • Use the Notes field in PowerPoint to attribute source, capture legend, url, etc • Create a bibliography to list images • If publishing, get policy from the journal to which you’re submitting
“I Already Have the Perfect Image” • Can you identify where you found it? • Does it have a copyright statement? • If so, can you find the copyright owner and ask permission? • If so, is there a price? • If so, are you willing to pay? • Be prepared to describe how you want to use the image
