  1. TeraGrid External Relations Q1-11 Update Elizabeth Leake March 24, 2011

  2. Q1 Media Milestones • 14 TeraGrid-related stories released by TeraGrid, RP, or affiliated sites • 112 “alerts” (Google/Eureka) featured TeraGrid on the web. Selected stories: 3/23/2011: Student volunteers sought for 2011 TeraGrid conference 3/22/2011: OSG Summer School--Apply by April 1 for June 26-30, 2011 event. 3/22/2011: GPUs versus CPUs: Apples and Oranges?3/10/2011: SDSC--Get ready for Gordon, vSMP workshop May 10-11, 20113/10/2011: PSC Scientists Co-Author Paper on Brain Wiring3/7/2011: The Performance Doctor is In: TACC breaks bottlenecks in computing codes with PerfExpert2/28/2011: SDSC's Trestles--new supercomputer for data-intensive research available to TeraGrid users 2/27/2011: TeraGrid Mourns the death of Phil Andrews (NICS)2/24/2011: TeraGrid Common User Environment Levels the High Performance Computing Playing Field2/18/2011: Announcing the Second EU/US Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences 2/8/2011: UChicago--TeraGrid: a Rich Port for Puerto Rican Researchers, Educators, and Students 2/8/2011: LSU REU in Computational Sciences (Summer Program 2011)-Applications now being accepted 2/3/2011: TeraGrid, Blue Waters sponsor Symposium on Data-Intensive Analysis, Analytics, and Informatics1/1/2011: Apply for computational time on TeraGrid by January 15, 2011

  3. Common User Environment Story released 2/24 • Navigating multiple systems with disparate environments used to be a challenge, but not anymore. CUE simplifies access by identifying commonalities and eliminating differences. • Working group led by Shawn Brown (PSC) • “CUE was the solution to a number of nagging problems from an EOT (education, outreach, and training) point of view,” Jeff Pummill, University of Arkansas Campus Champion. • https://www.teragrid.org/web/news/cue_is_easy

  4. GPU vs CPU story released 3/22 • Since China’s GPU-rich Tianhe-1A ranked first on the top500, there has been much discussion about the GPU advantage. • Historically for video game engines, GPUs are now capable of more than whiz-bang images or movies--they can perform high-end computations as much as 20 times faster! • Jan Zverina, SDSC science writer wrote TeraGrid’s GPU story • Interviews included: Towns, Kohlmeyer, Vetter, Nystrom, Walker, & Schulten. • https://www.teragrid.org/web/news/gpuvscpu Left: Tianhe-1A & NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPU TeraGrid GPU Options: Lincoln Nautilus Longhorn Spur TeraDRE Keeneland

  5. 2011 TeraGrid Highlights • EOT and Science Highlights combined—One book. • Escalated production due to transition • Individual highlights—top ten stories • Composites to illustrate TeraGrid’s impact in specific arenas, for example: • Why Mona Lisa smiled—The art of science • Matters of the heart • Building tomorrows workforce • Paving the way to he LHC • Staying one step ahead of disaster

  6. Second EU/US HPC Summer School, August 7-11, 2011 Lake Tahoe, California • Grad & Postdoc scholars • Apply by April 25: http://www.ncsa.illinois.edu/Conferences/EUS-summerschool/ • Female and minorities especially encouraged

  7. Register by March 30 and save $50 • The symposium will bring together leaders in the development of algorithms, applications, frameworks, and libraries for addressing data-intensive problems at unprecedented scale. • Examples of topics: • new kinds of applications that focus on analytics and informatics • integration of machine learning algorithms with analysis of multimodal data • ways to express workflows that couple tasks in data-intensive analysis • component models for productively building data-intensive applications • Experience will enable researchers to make more effective use of Blue Waters, NSF "Track 2" systems, and large systems in NSF and other agencies. The format will integrate presentations and group discussion to maximize interaction, identification of common issues, and synthesis of new ideas.

  8. Yet this month-- • TRAC deadline announcement, April 1 release • Leake continues to work with Bell (NCSA) to transition ER duties • Updating wiki documentation • Leake to assist Barker (NCSA) with TG’11 Communications Team • Offer assistance where needed.
