Review: Sets of Numbers Section 1-1
Vocab • Set • Element • Subset • Empty Set • Roster Notation • Finite Set • Infinite Set • Interval Notation • Set- builder Notation
Definitions • Set- a collection of items • Elements- the items which make up a set • Subset- A set whose elements belong to another set • Empty set- a set with no elements • Roster notation- elements of a set represented with braces { }
Def Continued • Finite Set- Definite, or finite number of elements • Infinite Set- Unlimited or infinite number of elements
So Why do I care? • Sets are all around you…. • Just like a collection right? • Creating a set is like creating a way to classify information. • ACTIVITY TIME!!!
Roster Notation • Use the elements listed in our sets to develop sets using roster notation • Use braces to list your elements • { }
Uses of Sets In Math • Remember Rational and Irrational Numbers? • What is a Rational Number? • Numbers that can be expressed as a quotient or ratio of two integers where the denominator is not a zero • Examples: -4/3, 1.25, etc. • What is an Irrational Number? • Numbers that cannot be expressed as a quotient of two integers, and their decimal forms do not terminate or repeat. • Example: π WHOA….ratio means what? What about denominator?!?!?
Real Number Sets Rational Numbers Irrational Numbers Integers Whole Numbers Whole numbers-the set of natural numbers and zero Natural Numbers Integer-a member of the set of whole numbers and their opposites Natural numbers-a counting number
Finite set vs Infinite Set • Finite Set: A limited number of elements are contained in the set • Example: The numbers on cards in a deck of cards • Infinite Set: A never ending amount of elements in a set. • Example: The numbers in the universe
Interval Notation • Would be hard to represent infinite sets using roster notation • Interval notation- Represents the set of numbers contained between two endpoints. • You can include or exclude points here
1 tell your group • What numbers are represented by the following: [5, 15]
3 tell your group • What numbers are included in the set (3, 7)
2 Infer and Tell your Group • What is meant by (3, 12]
Graphical Representation • The ( ) are represented by open dots when graphing on a number line • The [ ] are represented by closed dots when graphing on a number line • SMARTBOARD
Practice! • Complete the worksheet in your groups of three!
