Prominent findings • 360 student sports clubs and 17,672 athletic/sports union members • 1829 teams playing in BUSA, intra-mural competitions • 70% of Higher Education Institutions had a sports volunteering database • 17 focus sports existed at Yorkshire University’s • 2.9% of HE students were undertaking sports courses • 40% of Higher Education Institutions had a coaching database • 80% of Higher Education Institutions had a strategy for Sport

Challenges • Lack of information about the transient student population • Perceived and actual lack of co-ordination between universities • How to seek consistency of activity and to avoid duplication of effort and resource. • How to provide more catalyst activities • How to draw upon all potential resources available in and outside of the sector. • To make institutions more proactive and innovative to remove the barriers that effect higher participation.

Outcomes For the region • Increased co-ordination and collaboration between universities, • Robust infrastructure established that provides the capacity and capability to deliver • Reduced complexity and duplication through the creation of shared strategic objectives and outcomes. • Strong advocacy and a united voice for HE and Sport, with increased profile and acknowledgement of its contribution within the region. • A sustainable and exciting 2012 legacy that places sport at the heart of the region’s growth. • Stronger partnerships across sectors to exploit future opportunities.

The roles • To work within universities & BUCS sport development to assist in developing participation strategies including;- Assist university and student union relations through sport Assist development of intra mural programmes Develop and implement participation initiatives Assist universities to raise their internal sports club standards • Ensure activity is communicated and best practice shared. • To build and manage relationships with key strategic partners • To coordinate the delivery of the sports strand of the healthy universities initiative • To raise awareness of the nature and extent of university sport • To liaise with HESCo colleagues, universities and NGB’s to provide and assist in offering national governing body coaching awards • To develop the workforce through volunteering opportunities to enhance delivery.

  28. Finances • The HE and Sport Programme will run over three years, commencing September 2010.(TBC) • The total programme cost is £473,298. The total Sport England Community Investment Fund (CIF) funding requested is £236,649. • Partner Contribution% of total project costs Sport England £236,649 (50%) Regional universities £236,649 (50%)

Finances • Each institution has committed to making an annual £5750 cash contribution towards the strategic development of the regional programme. • An in-kind contribution has been provided by the partnership of £10k per uni • Additional £500 paid to host Universities • Three Higher Education and Sport Co-ordinators – employed by lead hosting institutions. Starting salary of £24,877 plus on-costs of 23.3 per cent. • Annual programme delivery budget of £18,000 (£16,000 year 1), including additional £2,618 for initial marketing/promotion..
