  3. Sport England and NAVCA - Aims of the Pilot • Improve communication and collaboration between • Encourage greater partnership working • Encourage and develop infrastructure support to sports clubs. • Demonstrate links between National Indicators: NI6, NI7 and NI8

  4. Sustaining Participation • Bigger, better Clubs: Policy, procedure & systems development • Link Local Agendas: • Local Area Agreement targets, Local Strategic Partnerships • Deliver Public Services: Procurement and commissioning

  5. Aims of the project for York CVS • 4 strands • Improve our knowledge of the clubs in York • Increase awareness amongst sports clubs about the work of York CVS • Work with sports groups to understand their needs and what we can offer them • Develop partnership working with Local Authority Sports team / County Sports

  6. How we did it - Improving our knowledge Worked with the council to clean up their database and asked permission from clubs to add to our records. • Increased number of clubs on our database from 14 to 118 • Improved quality of the council’s records

  7. How we did it - Raising awareness • Attended Active York Forum • Gave short presentation on work of York CVS • Talked afterwards with a number of groups • Sent groups copies of our newsletter • Gives information on training courses and current hot topics in the VCS

How we did it – Working with groups • Aimed to complete 4 health checks • Worked with 3 groups – a Karate club, a running club, and an underwater hockey group (Octopush) • Areas of work identified included marketing, governance issues (strengthening management committees, policies and procedures), funding, managing finances, and volunteering

  9. How we did it – Working with groups • One group was quite resistant to working with us. • Healthcheck still highlighted a number of issues • Group plans to undertake a major capital development

How we did it – Developing Partnerships • Regular meetings with Sports and Active Leisure Team to discuss approach to the project and best groups to work with • Spent time exploring our roles and what we could offer within the project • Initial approach to groups through CYC team – a familiar and trusted contact

  11. Project Findings • Demonstrable need for generic infrastructure support for sports groups • Sports groups are accessing more of our services – such as training courses – than before the project • Importance of developing good relationship with local authority’s Sports and Active Leisure Team

  12. Improved relationships “York are delighted to have been involved in the project, and the benefits have been clearly visible in our work with the city's voluntary sports clubs. Primarily, the relationship between the local authority, the community sports network and the CVS has been strengthened threefold” Jo Gilliland, York City Council – Sport and Active Leisure Team

After the project • All groups said they would continue to work with York CVS • Attended CYC’s Sports Fair on May 23rd. • Will be taking part in a volunteering event with Active York Forum later in the year • Increased participation from sports clubs in regular CVS events • Ongoing work with CYC

The East Riding Pilot – Impact on clubs “On a scale of 1-5 I would put the value of the NAVCA project as 5 very high” David Farrier Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club The whole process, although still ongoing, was very worthwhile particularly in understanding what support is available. The Final Word “It seems as though we were only playing at club development – we now know where to signpost clubs for the most appropriate support” Active York Integrated partnership working between ERVAS, statutory and other infrastructure organisations has been significantly enhanced with new relationships developed as a consequence of the pilot overall.
