Visualization The ability for users to visualize raw and processed data easily will be key to the success of the SNS Many tools currently exist – could be adapted at existing centers Need (evolving) infrastructure for better 3d visualization 3d cave - future Needed on the timescale of the experiment Flexibility to change tools at the instrument/experiment level without going to a programmer Resources needed to extend current tools to TOF Common problems for pulsed sources (sparse data; cut; non-linear transformations) need to be dealt with up front Scientific communities set needs for their experiments Pynn -Wed
Collaboration • Remote collaboration will provide many advantages to users, to SNS and to the scientific community • Allow complementary expertise to be used to plan, execute and analyze experiments • World-wide reach, theorists and experimenters • Reduce time to publication • Enable better experiment planning • Be used as an educational tool • Permit off-site users (e.g., professors) to participate during experiment • Allow instrument scientist to monitor progress of an experiment without continuous presence • Relieve some IR responsibility for educating new users (distance classes, demos, etc.) • Allow people to consult others who have worked on similar problems and share know-how • Supplements IR role • Broadens the “user-base” of SNS as well as its impact Pynn -Wed
Collaborations • Requirements can be met to a large extent with existing tools, but they need to be integrated • Desktop availability (perhaps with enhanced capability in specific locations e.g. special labs at universities) • Web cam and voice • On line data manipulation and sharing with remote viewing and control • Replicate data room (for teaching at off-site locations) • Record interaction sessions in an electronic note book • Facility needs to provide training sessions in the technology • Successful models already (e.g., MSEL) • Security issues will need to be fully and carefully addressed Pynn -Wed
