Law – Equal for All? • What does it mean to live in a “just” society? • The idea of law has always been associated with the idea of justice! • The law is supposed to be equal for all, ensuring equity in all situations may be unjust! Consider the following example: • Break and Enter – to get rope to save a drowning friend – should that person be given the same punishment as the person who breaks in to steal the televison? • So should the law take the circumstances into consideration?
Equal Treatment under the Law • Treat like cases alike and different cases differently. • What does this statement mean? • All Canadians are supposed to be treated equally under the law. Make a list of situations in which equal treatment might not be just treatment. For each situation, explain your rationale.
