  2. Great War 1914-1918 • The global military conflict that embroiled most of the worlds great powers, assembled in two opposing powers. • It lasted four years with a death toll of 15 million people were killed, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history.

  3. Events Leading up to 1914 • The immediate or proximate cause of war was the assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Gavrilo Princip, Serbian nationalist.
