School Seal • The school seal is the ultimate representation of Mepham High School. It bares words “opportunity, industry, achievement” which is a motto that the students of Mepham have held themselves to since groundbreaking in 1934. The school seal not only accurately reflects the Mepham community with these three words, but also portrays a picture of the iconic building that the students learn and develop in over their four year high school career.
Pirate Statue • The pirate statue, located in Mepham library, is a figure that Mepham students pass by daily. The rumor is that if you rub the pirate’s booty (aka treasure chest) it will bring you good luck. It is a clear representation of our school mascot and students.
Senior Ledge • What has become to be known as the “senior ledge” is actually officially dedicated to Mike Sanfilippo who ran for Mepham track in1974.His unfortunate, early death led the family to generously donate a large sum of money annually to Mepham track. Today the senior ledge is a central location where students often sit.
Track • The red track at Mepham is significant because of Mepham’s strong track team. Mephamtrack is known to be one of the best teams on Long Island as they have won several conference and division titles. The track is used for many PE classes and for many charitable walks held at Mepham.
Pirate Logo • The pirate logo represents Mepham’sstrong student morale. The students at Mepham are spirited and have an intense sense of pride for their pirates. The pirate logo can be found in every area of the building, form the t-shirts to the sports booster stickers.
Computer • The computers at Mepham, although sometimes slow and frustrating, provide students with a wealth of knowledge right at their fingertips. Computers at Mepham are used daily for projects, essays, and research papers.
Smartboard • The smartboards are located in most classrooms throughout the building. They allow teachers to offer interactive lessons for their students, which provides for an enjoyable learning environment at Mepham.
Chalkboard • The chalkboards at Mepham are original. Although we have updated technology, the chalkboards are there to remind us of the rich history and longevity of Mepham high school. Teachers who don’t have the luxury of a smartboard use the chalkboards regularly for lessons and reminders.
Picture of Wellington C. Mepham • Wellington C. Mepham’s portrait is located in the foyer. His portrait reminds the students of the extensive history of their school, and of the creator of their school district.
Basketball • Mepham’sbasketball team has a big following and our players have a great passion for the game. They practice daily, and work hard constantly in the gym during our winter season.
Wrestling Singlet • The wrestling team is Mepham’s most successful team in its history. It was nationally recognized after it went 99-0 led by coach Sprig Gardner.
Pom-Poms • The cheer team gives Mepham its intense school spirit. They have been a part of Mepham since its opening and it has evolved into a competitive sport, and are a fundamental piece to the school today.
Football Jersey • Mephamfootball games are always filled with students and parents ready to cheer on their team. Football games are main events at Mepham that everyone enjoys watching and rooting for the home team. Homecoming and rivalries with Kennedy and Calhoun are popular games that many people attend.
Football Program • An original football program cost 10 cents. Mepham football has a rich history and always is known around Long Island as a ruthless team.When fans support the team at important home games they receive this program telling them what this game is about and who they are playing.
Pencil Sharpener • In every room in the building one can find a small, hand-crank pencil sharpener. These sharpeners are used by students when their pencils are in need of a point, but rarely get the job done as they are old and usually broken.
Clock on the Front of the Building • The clock placed above the front doors of the school adds to the vast, grand entrance that the building is known for. The clock signifies the present time but also the time that has gone by since the opening in 1934.
Parking Sticker • The parking sticker is the ticket to allow students to park in the back lot in their senior year. The day the parking stickers are ready to be received, the line out the cafeteria doors is endless with anxious seniors hoping they have all the necessary papers for their sticker. Without it, you will be sure to receive a ticket from Ms. P.
1936 Plaque • This plaque is located next to the doors that lead into the foyer. When ever anyone walks into the building they see this plaque and tells them just how old Mepham is and symbolizes the opening of the school.
Old Locker • One set of original lockers is located across from the west cafeteria. They are small and narrow and remind the students of how the school used to be back in its original form. It also makes students feel a greater sense of appreciation for their own lockers.
Flagpole • This flagpole has been a staple at Mepham for many years. Whenever anyone drives past Mepham they see this flagpole at the front of the school. It has been used to symbolize strength and stability and allows for the mourning of losses as well as strength.
National Honor Society Certificate • The certificate has symbolized national achievement as a scholar as well as service to the community. Despite its long run, this certificate is an honor to have from any year. This is something every student strives to achieve to put on their college applications and to feel proud for all of their hard work.
Printer • Although not available to earlier students, the printer has aided in school assignments and projects. The printer also symbolizes the evolution of the school technologically through the years.
Heater • Despite constantly causing problems, like noise and untimely usage, all of Mepham’s students have been thankful for the heat come winter time. When students walk from their cars to the school they feel the heat instantly. Sometimes students even get very hot and sweaty inside the school while it is 20 degrees outside!
P.A. System • Since its inception at school, the public address system has been a staple at each day of school, bringing important news and notices to students and teachers. The announcers play a different song every morning. Students always love to hear what they’re going to play next!
Library Desks • The old library desks give students free space to do work. More importantly the desks serve as a reminder of the old library and how it was structured, as well as how popular it used to be.
Flip Camera • Flip Cameras aid in the development of new and creative projects for students. Gilder Lehrman scholars often use them for assignments.
Map in Auditorium • The map in the auditorium has been around since the school was built and it serves as a reminder of the past and how valued Long Island truly is. It was restored in 2007 to make a more modern and accurate map.
Bake Sale Table • The bake sale table serves as a selling spot for numerous clubs and teams. It is adjacent to the senior ledgewhich is a great selling location because many students pass it on their way out of school. The table is used by many teams and clubs to fundraise as well as raising money for charitable events.
Vending Machine • Vending machines allow students and others to come to the school and grab a quick snack and/or drink. During class many students go to the vending machine so they do not have to wait on the cafeteria line. They are very useful for everyone at Mepham.
Muffin • The muffins in the cafeteria are the most popular item offered. Whenever someone walks into the cafeteria it is almost guaranteed to see someone eating one. They symbolize how important the food is to the students at Mepham, and how much they appreciate the freshly baked items.
Golf Cart • The golf cart aids the jobs of the trainers and coaches, as well as gym teachers. After school, you can see our school trainer, Bridget, on this cart to help all of our athletes. It serves as a reminder of the importance of health and safety while all of Mepham’ssports play their respective seasons.
Weight Room • The weight room is in the basement and it is used by many teams and athletes in order to train for upcoming games and seasons. It also represents the true grit and hard work put into Mepham Athletics. Many PE classes go to the weight room to exercise and learn the proper ways to use the equipment. You are not permitted to go in the weight room without being supervised by a coach or teacher.
Locker Room • The locker rooms at Mepham are a space where students can get prepared. Both boys and girls use their locker room to change for all P.E classes. Before and after intense practices athletes also come to the locker room to get assembled and recover. The locker room is a place where athletes and students can find anything they need to be prepared.
Baseball Field • The baseball fields have been around as long as the school and they have held numerous games for gym students and student athletes alike. Many students come to this field to watch their school’s team play and cheer them on.
Calculator • The calculator has been a major help to many Mepham students, since its arrival to Mepham. Calculators can be found in every math room for students to use during class. The calculator also serves as a representation of the technological advancements which have occurred over Mepham’s history.
Beaker • A beaker represents all of the science classes administered at Mepham. Beakers are used in almost every science class to measure and interpret data. It also symbolizes how science has changed throughout the years Mepham has existed.
Plays by Shakespeare • Shakespeare, the storied writer, represents the English department at Mepham. Every year we read at least one work by Shakespeare. Classes often act out the scenes in class to get a better understanding of what Shakespeare is trying to convey in his plays.
Globe • The globe represents the Social Studies Department and how the world is such an integral part of Mepham and its history. The globe is used by teachers to explain geography and show students the country they are currently talking about.
New Locker • Today, student’s lockers are a huge part of their high school experience. Moving from the freshman lockers to the big tall lockers is something all freshman look up to. Students use their lockers to store all of their belongings throughout the day and go to it frequently.
Laptop • Laptops are used in almost every class that Mepham has. Students use them to do school projects and activities. They provide for a faster and better learning experience because we can use technology to enhance our projects.
Gym • The Gym is where all students take P.E. classes. This is also where all volleyball, badminton, wrestling, and basketball games take place. The newest gym was built for all girls and the big gym remained for all guys. Our gym is one of the oldest in our county.
Cafeteria • The cafeteria is where all freshmen must eat lunch and where upperclassmen go if they don’t want to go out. Many students come to the cafeteria to buy snacks and drinks or just to do some homework.
Slice of Pizza from Luigi’s • Believe it or not, Luigi’s is a big part of Mepham. Tons of students walk over to get a slice of pizza for lunch because it is so quick and convenient.
Yearbook • Yearbooks are very sentimental and memorable books. This is what the students of Mepham look back on to remember their days at this school. Yeakbook club puts in a lot of hard work and effort into making Mepham’s yearbook a good representation of their years at this school.
Stage • The stage is where many events at Mepham take place including school assemblies, Mr. Mepham, Mepham’s annual fashion show, So They Think They Can Dance, and Mepham’s Annual Talent Show. This is also where all Skull and Bones Drama productions take place.
Art Center • The Art Center is where many students make remarkable pieces of art that they will keep for the rest of their lives. This is where you can always find Ms. Kane and Ms. Schullazhelping their students. Many students find the art center as a stress-free place to get creative.
Instrument • This instrument represents Mepham’s talented band. Our band plays at every home football game and in many parades throughout Bellmore. Band even competes and performs in out of state competitions and performances.
Scantron • Scantrons are something that every student has seen and used in Mepham. They are used for almost every test and quiz at Mepham because they are so quick and simple.
Bible • This bible symbolizes the groundbreaking of Mepham High School in January of 1935. It represents the beginning and early days of Mepham and gives us something to look at as history of our school.
