  1. Aggregation and Syndication of Environmental Health Content Environmental Health Sciences Pete Myers, Ph. D Edgerton Foundation Todd Koym

  2. What we’re doing Why we’re doing it How we’re doing it Why we’re doing it the way we’re doing it Challenges

  3. What we’re doing Collecting environmental health content from varied sources News Scientific Studies Organizational Reports Filtering Organizing and archiving the content By source, subject, geography

  4. Republishing content Simple, one-page view Guided navigation of archives You know what’s in the archive before you start looking Email newsletter Outgoing, customizable RSS feeds By source, subject, geography, date

  5. Why? Too much info, too little time Too many sources – many not known for environmental health content Filtering/perspective provided by respected expert (Google’s not a SME) Context Related news, science, and reports

  6. How? Content Acquisition Staff and contributors submit content via web forms Incoming feeds (e.g., Moreover.com) Approval queue and editorial review Describe the content, link to the original source

  7. Metadata Data about data Semi-automatic assignment according to rules we maintain Resource Description Framework (RDF) A framework for describing resources – especially suited to describing web content Using existing standards (e.g., Dublin Core) Rich Site Summary (RSS 1.0)

  8. Why this way? Leveraging existing content Adding value Filtering Metadata Turning text into reusable data Part destination site, part service Provide high-quality, relevant feeds for other web sites

  9. Challenges Finding and acquiring the right content Classifications Subject taxonomy Sources Geography Good metadata takes time

  10. El fin Todd.Koym@EdgertonFoundation.org P.S., The technology we’re employing (RDF) is quite interesting. Grab me later if you want to talk in detail.
