E-SOKO System Feature & Functionality • E-SOKO is an agricultural Market Price Information system that allows • Automated price data collection and entry - Market Agents Collect real-time price information and submit via phone (J2ME / IVR). • Automated alerts and Reminders – the system sends alerts and information back out to the market agents and MINAGRIC officials in a timely and systematic way. • Current prices access - Farmers/traders accesscurrent agricultural commodity prices information of registered commodities in all major markets within Rwanda via SMS & Web. • Indicator and reports for standard analysis- The ministry has access to real-time commodity prices information trends (Pre-configured analytics ) that help in planning • Market registry with profiles for all major markets • Web access Data views- users view and map data and key reports or chats by commodity, district and market (see below for an illustrative example);

  4. e-SOKO system Channels; • Web, J2ME, SMS & IVR COVERAGE • 41 Market Covered (i.e. 3 for Kigali, 10 for Western Province, 10 for the Eastern Province, 8 for the Northern Province and 10 for the Southern Province) • A total of 30 major agriculture commodities are surveyed • Agents collect and submit market prince information on a weekly basis Public and Farmers’ Access guide • Access via SMS channel • Type the following SMS string “Price[Space]MarketName[space]CommodityName” • Send to shortcode – 7656 • Farmer/Trader/Public will get an instant response with the latest price per unit of the commodity • Web Access • Through the URL www.esoko.gov.rw , one can access the latest commodity prices in all markets as well as weekly and monthly reports regarding commodities available. Current System usage • SMS being the major access channel for the farmers& public, a total of 3090 SMS traffic records both inbound& outbound were recorded – for the Period 2nd June – 4th Sept 2009. • Data submission done via J2ME is currently at 99.9% success rate

  7. Next Steps – e-SOKO phase 2 • In order to complement the development of a broader agricultural system for MINAGRI, eSOKO Phase II will; • Focus on creating eSoko as a market place or trading point. • Monitor production and Agri-inputs • Monitoring/Surveillance of animal and crop diseases
