Geiger Mueller Counter • Type of survey instrument used in nuclear medicine • Is an essential part of an effective radiation safety program • Can be used as a personal or laboratory instrument • Is used to detect levels of radiation
Quality Control • Term is used to describe the routine assessment of an instrument’s performance • There are two types of “QC” done • Accuracy: should be assessed at installation, at least annually, and after repair • Constancy: should be assessed at installation and on a daily basis
Quality Control • Constancy assessments should be done with a long half life source located on the instrument • Exposure rate should be within 10% of the expected reading, if not, GM detector should be recalibrated • Batteries should also be checked prior to each use
