  2. NAVIANCE Naviance is a comprehensive, easy to use website that you and your family can use to help in making decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. Naviance is accessible from any computer, inside and outside of school, with an internet connection.

  3. Registering for Naviance • Before you begin, you will need a working email address. If you do not have an email address and wish to create one, free accounts can be created by visiting one of these sites: • www.yahoomail.com, www.hotmail.com, or www.gmail.com. • Next… • Go to http://connection.naviance.com/Highland/ • Click on I need to register> • Enter your student ID number and then click Register • On the following page, enter and confirm your email address • Next, enter and confirm a password (be sure you write it down!) • Check the I Accept Box if you agree to the Privacy Statement • Last click on Complete Registration

  5. Graduation Requirements I. Meet STATE requirements for your class II. Earn minimum 120 credits (130 class of 2017 & beyond) III. Pass the following courses: • 4 years of Health/Physical Education • 4 years of English • 1 year of World History/Cultures • 2 years of U.S. History • 3 years of Mathematics (Alg 1 & Geometry minimum) • 3 years of Laboratory Science (Biology req.) • 1 year of World Language • 1 year of Visual/Performing Arts • 1 year of 21st Century Life & Careers, or Career-Technical/Education • ½ year of Financial, Business, & Economic Literacy IV. Meet the district attendance policy #5113 V. Complete the English Research Paper

  6. The College Orientation Pattern Preparing to meet requirements for college should be a long-term project that begins with your first year of high school. The usual minimum of high school units required for college is as follows: • English = 4 yrs • World Languages = 2 yrs (the same language) • Math (AlgI, Geometry, AlgII) = 3 yrs (4 yrsrecomm.) • Science (Laboratory) = 3 yrs • Social Studies = 3 yrs (2 yr US Hist, 1 yr World His) • Electives from traditional academic subjects = 2 yrs • Totaling 17 (could be 18) • SHOULD HAVE 10 UNITS MIN. AFTER 6 SEMESTERS!

Athletic Eligibility • All incoming freshmen are academically eligible for the 1st semester, which includes both the fall & winter sports seasons • All students must pass at least 30 credits by September to be eligible for that fall season • All students must be passing at least 15 credits to be eligible for the spring sports season *Seniors with early dismissal and cannot mathematically earn 15 credits can still become eligible by passing all of their courses * • All students must turn in a parent permission card as well as have a physical examination by either the school doctor or their family doctor.

Tutoring options • Tutoring is available for all students • Your teachers should always be your first tutor • If you would like a student tutor, the NHS conducts free tutoring for all students from October to June in the LMC. Look for announcements for days and hours. • Lunch time Math tutoring is also available daily. See your counselor to see if this applies to you.

  10. Summer school options are available on our school website Credit Completion/Summer School Illness can only become excused with a doctor’s note to your VP! Credit completion rules are on the school website Credit completion is based on attendance and is handled through your vice principal’s office I will review the rules and go over your CC schedule in necessary at the end of the year Excused absences: *School activity *Absence with Dr. Note *Religious obligation(pre-approved by VP) * Death in immediately family Summer school is not offered at Highland HS, but at the end of each year, students who have failed courses will be given options to remediate those courses via the counseling office 4 UNEXCUSED TIMES LATE = 1 ABSENCE

Unofficial Transcripts • Check your demographics from top to bottom • Check course titles (should be in all CAPS) • Check to be sure your credits are correct • Check electives (visual & performing and practical/career education). Do you have both complete? • Check GPA and class rank • UNOFFICIAL transcripts can always be forwarded to you with photo ID. • OFFICIAL transcripts must be sent with mailing address by us. If you are not 18 years old, we must have a transcript agreement form signed and on file. ATHLETES must a have a separate ATHLETIC transcript release form on file for coaches. * Transcript Request Forms are also available on the Counseling website*

Financial Aid FAFSAwww.fafsa.gov • FAFSA = FreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid • Financial Aid Night = Tuesday, September 13, 2016 • Step one in the financial aid application process is to go to www.fafsa.gov, where students and parents must register for a PIN • IMPORTANT NOTE: Any site that ends in .com, .org, etc., probably charges a fee. You DO NOT need to pay a fee to complete the FAFSA! • For general assistance you can also call the Camden County College Financial Aid Office @ 856-374-4985 or email them @ financialaid@camdencc.edu

National Honor Society (NHS)advisor: Ms. Smith In order to qualify for admissions to Highland’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, students must meet the following criteria: • Student must Juniors or Seniors • The student must be enrolled at HHS for at least one full semester prior to admission • The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher (no rounding up – a student’s GPA MUST be at least 3.50). • The student must have exhibited service to school through participation in various sports and/or co-curricular activities (students must be actively involved in TWO activities prior to their junior year to qualify and THREE activities prior to their senior year to qualify. Service in the community is also required. • The student must obtain faculty and advisor recommendations attesting to outstanding leadership qualities and unquestionable character.

  14. NCAA • If you are an athlete, your counselor should know from freshman year • Visit www.eligibilitycenter.org • Must have 16+ cores. 10+ after 6 semesters (3 yrs) and 7 of the 10 in English, Math & Science • Your coach(es) are another valuable resource • Your NCAA GPA is NOT the same as your transcript GPA (non-cores do not count) • New rules for those entering college on/after Aug. 1, 2016

  15. Valedictorian & Salutatorian • Grade 9 Honors selections are determined by district supervisors as per district guidelines • The maximum number of Honors classes a student can be recommended for in grade 9 and 10 is four (English, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science) • In most cases, future valedictorians and salutatorians have had the maximum number of AP/Honors courses in all grades. A fifth AP/Honors course should be considered both junior and senior years if becoming a valedictorian and/or salutatorian is a goal. Ranking (in accordance with Board Policy #2624)

Counseling Office rules • Phone: (856) 227-4100 ext. 4036 or 4037 • Fax: (856) 227-4822 • In order to see your counselor, complete a yellow request slip in homeroom, in the café, in the LMC or take one outside the Counseling office. • Yellow request slips can be dropped off to the counseling office in passing. Expect to be called down in 24-48 hours • Pop-In’s are not allowed. If you do not have a pass or were called down by the counselor, you will be handed a yellow request slip and be asked to return to class. • ALL emergencies will be handled IMMEDIATELY!
