Prerequisites for Scholars Academy • Algebra I Honors Completed/Geometry • Physical Science and Bio Completed • EOC for both classes strongly encouraged to be complete before you enter Beach High. • If you have NOT taken or PASSED an EOC in Algebra I or Geometry you MUST see me to set up after school tutoring. • Must maintain your 3.0 unweighted GPA during the 4 years of High School

  6. Paperwork Needed: • Contract Form– Must have completed; it is in your packet. Parent signature required. AP Contract Included • Make sure you CAREFULLY check your schedule TODAY. If you are missing a class, are scheduled in a class you have already passed, or have questions regarding requirements see ME and Ms WILLIAMS after the tour. • Schedule for next year – Read over your schedule CAREFULLY!! Make sure you are scheduled to take the REQUIRED classes for Scholars. PRE-IB is a must

What Highly Selective Institutions Recommend: • SA students should strongly consider taking the most rigorous courses in all core areas. • Stats, Calculus and Physics are highly recommended and required for STEAM • We are an AP and IB school. • Show how you “stand out” in leadership and community service • Test scores are important • College writing ability and character qualities are predicted from your essay

QUIZ:Scholars Academy AP Classes Requirements • How many AP classes must you take in your Freshman year and which? • How many AP classes must you take in your Sophomore year and which? • What GPA must you maintain to remain within the Scholars Academy? • What room do you go to if you have a schedule or grade issue? • When is lunch?

Scholars Academy Requirements: • Must take English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language all 4 years, regardless of FLVS or summer classes • Must complete Math through PreCalculus • Must take a minimum of 1 AP class in 9th grade (AP World History) • Must take a minimum of 2 AP class in 10th grade (AP English Lang and AP European History) • Must take a minimum of 3 AP classes in each of the 11th and 12th grades • 3 AP Classes suggested for Senior Year • 100 Community Hours by the end of Senior year • IB Diploma students meet the requirements

  10. Community Hours: • You need a minimum of 100 community hours to obtain the Scholars Diploma. • Do not wait until your Senior year to start earning your hours • The school will offer several opportunities to earn community service hours such as donations, volunteering, etc.

Summer Reading Assignment: • Available at the school website student tab. • Must complete the reading and take annotated notes which can be used during the essay writing the first week of school. • Eng.   12. School begins at 7:20am and ends at 2:20pm You must wear uniform and ID at all times at MBSH

  13. You are allowed a maximum of 5 absences in a semester course and 10 absences in a year course. Because of block schedule, each day’s absence is actually counted as 2 absences missed!

  14. The uniform includes solid red or gray tops and black, khaki or blue jean pants or slacks; outerwear should be red or white. Electronic devices (BYOD) are allowed for research only at teacher’s discretion.

  15. SCHEDULE: 8 periods spread over even and odd days ODD: 1 7:20 – 9:00 3 9:05 – 10:35 10:40 – 12:10 11:15 – 12:45 12:50 – 2:20 EVEN: 2 7:20 – 9:00 4 9:05 – 10:35 10:40 – 12:10 11:15 – 12:45 12:50 – 2:20 Lunch at 10:40 – 11:10 or 12:15 – 12:45

  16. Scholars Academy students must meet the highest standards of academic integrity. MIAMI BEACH SENIOR HIGH STUDENT HONOR CODE: I affirm that all work I submit is mine alone, and that I will give proper credit to others when I use their words or ideas. I will neither give nor receive unauthorized assistance on any assignment, and I commit myself to academic conduct that will reflect well upon my school, my community and myself at all times. I understand that there are severe penalties for violating this affirmation.

  17. Scholars for Newbies: 101 • Don’t be afraid of getting lost, it happened to all of us. • Ask for help! Older students may seem intimidating but they are there to help you! • Use your resources (counselors, teachers, etc) • Don’t slack off your freshman year, it will be hard to recuperate later on • Teachers want you to succeed, so establish good relationships • Do not take in more than you can handle, especially while you are adjusting to the high school atmosphere • DO NOT Procrastinate !
