Advantages of Goal-Setting • It gives one something specific to aim for. • It provides a manner of achieving success in life, which results in feeling good about yourself. • It allows one to take charge of his/her life. • It allows one to take responsibility for his achievements and failures.
Effective Goal-Setting • Goals should be realistic and reachable. For example if you experience considerable difficulty in Science today, you will likely not choose to become a research scientist. • Goal should be specific. For example: state that you plan to achieve 75% on the Social exam, rather than just “do well” • Goals should be flexible. Don’t give up if you do not reach your goal as planned; try again by modifying the approach or the goal statement. • Goals are things you can achieve on your own, not things that are dependent on others for success.
Set Your Own Short-Term Goal • Your task is to set a short-term goal, using what you’ve learned about goal-setting. • Your goal must be set TODAY and it must be met by the last day of the health unit ( November 29th ) • You will be graded on the following: • How realistic and reachable is your goal? • How specific is your goal? How can you measure it? • Was your goal met? If not, what modifications have you made to reach it? • What plans have you made to build on what you’ve accomplished? Make your short-term goal a long-term one.
Mr. Urbani’s short-term goal • Between now and November 29th, I plan on increasing my level of physical activity. • To achieve this goal, I will be hitting the gym3 days/week. In addition to this, I also plan to continue playing hockey once/week and going for a long walk once/week. • Schedule • Hockey: Monday nights 9:30-10:45 • Gym: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:30-10:00 • Walks: one of Friday, Saturday or Sunday, for 40 minutes probably right after nap time (around2:00-3:00). • Flexibility: • long walks revolve around many variables, but if it hasn’t happened by Sunday night, I will head over to the gym after I put the kids to bed. • If I have to miss a day at the gym, I can go on the weekend at nap time. • Hockey is non-negotiable
Interests, Abilities, Aptitudes An important first step in career planning is to develop a greater awareness and understanding of oneself. This will enable you to make good occupational choices which contribute to your future happiness. Individual characteristics can be viewed in terms of interests, abilities, aptitudes, attitudes, temperaments and needs.
Interests Interests are the things you like to do, and are frequently reflected in the activities you participate in. Research shows that those who are happiest in their jobs, are those who work in areas closely related to their interests. Interests in all areas of your life may include school, household tasks, sports, leisure activities and work experiences.
Abilities Refer to the things you do well as a result of practice or training; your skills. For Example:

Aptitude Refers to a natural ability or potential to learn in certain areas with ease.
Attitudes • Reflect the way you think about yourself, about work, about other people and about the situations you find yourself in. They influence the type of career you choose, how well you perform in the job, get along with your co-workers, and whether or not you keep the job.
Temperament Is that part of your personality which determine the type or style of work you prefer. This includes the working conditions that appeal to you.
Needs Are what you require from the job. These needs may be physical and/or psychological. The most common career needs include: • Job satisfaction- this includes being happy with the work you do, and feeling appreciated for that work. • Self-fulfillment- this results from doing something worthwhile and feeling needed or important because of it. • Money- the amount of money each individual perceives as necessary varies from person to person. • Benefits- benefits viewed as necessary will vary among individuals, but they commonly include such things as holidays, a car, and medical expenses. • Opportunity for advancement- this includes opportunities for change within the job, including promotions.
