Who is Northrop Grumman? • 3rd largest defense contractor in the US • Integrated Systems Division (formerly Aircraft Division): • Air combat systems • Unmanned systems • Airborne air & ground surveillance systems • Airborne battle management systems • Airborne electronic warfare systems
The Problem • Difficulty recruiting recent engineering graduates to Northrop Grumman (NG) • Competition
The Solution • Create a game to increase interest in NG and its products • Excellent medium for target demographic • Quick insight into what NG does • More engaging than pamphlets • Increasing interest in the industry is enough
The ETC’s Role • Prototype a recruiting game for Integrated Systems Division • Provide insight as to how the prototype can be further developed and expanded to all the divisions within NG • Working with Mark Conger (Project Manager, Video Game Technology Project)
Metrics for Success • Deliver a prototype that Mark is happy with • Guest Testing Results: • Who does NG employ? • Does it give you a feeling of patriotism? • Do you think NG’s work is meaningful? • Does it make you want to know more about NG and/or their industry?
Progress • Client visit in LA • Brainstorming and storyboards • Freezing on an idea and platform (Flash)
Game Should Show: • Integrated Systems makes technologies work well together • The work done at NG is important and meaningful • NG employees build cool “toys” and work with the most advanced technologies • The “toys” aren't built magically
Restrictions • Can’t kill people • Can’t be ridiculously inaccurate • Can’t misrepresent NG & their products • Focus on Integrated Systems division
Guest Testing • Testing at several development stages: • High school students • Engineering students • ETC students • Guest Testing Results: • Who does NG employ? • Does it give you a feeling of patriotism? • Do you think NG’s work is meaningful? • Does it make you want to know more about NG and/or their industry?
Risks • Hollywood has tainted our perception of what is possible • Client doesn’t know exactly what they want • Lack of knowledge regarding NG and their industry
We Could Use Help With… • Sound • UI/game design feedback • Flash programming
