What Is Amoebic Dysentery? • Scientific Name: Amebiasis • Intestinal illness • Caused by microscopic parasite called Entamoebahistolytica • Protozoan
How is it spread from person to person? • Through contaminated food and water • Through contaminated hands • Person to person contact • Through contact with human feces from humans who have amebiasis
Who is most susceptible to Amebiasis? • Anyone can get amebiasis • More often, people arriving from tropical or subtropical areas with poor sanitary conditions • Individuals in institutions
Treatment of amebiasis • Since the causing agents are living, you take an antibiotic to get rid of amebiasis. • One specific antibiotic is Metronidazole • The standard dose is 750mg • You take this for 7-10 days
The History of Amebiasis • Amebiasis was first described by a Russian scientist named Feder Losch in 1873 • In 1875, he was able to isolate an amoeba from the feces of a human with amebiasis • There is no specific source of Amebiasis • Today, in New York, there are approximately 600 cases reported each year
