The Planning process • There are 3 Main ways of planning an essay: • Mind mapping • Topic sentencing • Bullet pointing • Today we will experiment with all three methods to plan an answer to a typical essay question: • How does Shakespeare present love in Romeo and Juliet? • What are the different types of love that exist within the play? • Which characters are linked with love in the play and how is this displayed in their behaviours? • Why do you think Shakespeare wanted the play of Romeo and Juliet to be based in the theme of love? • How is love presented through Shakespeare’s language choices?

Topic Sentencing Topic sentences should do two things: Answer the question Introduce the paragraph to come • Each new paragraph should have a topic sentence to help sign post your work and add coherence. • Use key words from the main question in your topic sentence to help keep you to the point, i.e. ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘love’. • You will now practice writing topic sentences for each of the guiding bullet points supporting this question. • Be specific in your TS, remember this is the ‘P’ in your PQA/ PEE structure and needs to allow you to develop a detailed analysis later in the paragraph. • We will explore writing introductions next time.
Question: How does Shakespeare present love in Romeo and Juliet? First bullet point: What are the different types of love that exist within the play? TS1: Shakespeare explores the theme of ‘love’ within Romeo and Juliet in a variety of ways, including through romantic love. TS2: There are countless references to love within Romeo and Juliet but by far the most significant of these is the romantic love that exists between the two protagonists, as it is this fatal romance on which the play is grounded. TS3: Arguably, the most significant form of love presented in Romeo and Juliet is the romantic love existing between Romeo and Juliet. Rank order these. Where are the missed opportunities?

Writing an introduction • Interpret what the question is asking you to write on • Use key words from the question, including Shakespeare’s name to help provide a clear focus. • Summarise in general terms how you will address the questions (this may be referring to the guiding bullet points) • Keep your introduction relatively short, this is not where you will gain the majority of your marks, the main body and analysis is.
Example Introduction How does Shakespeare present love in Romeo and Juliet? Shakespeare presents love in a variety of ways in a backdrop of 16th Century Verona. His two central characters embark on an epic yet ill-fated journey of love, culminating in their tragic deaths. Society at the time Shakespeare was writing was distinctly patriarchal. Both within the family and throughout towns and cities, men were the rulers and women were expected to obey and support the decisions of men. This makes for interesting family relationships within Romeo and Juliet, not least between Juliet and her father, Lord Capulet, over the issue of arranged marriage. Love is a theme which runs parallel to the overriding tragedy of the play yet offers lightness and hope to an inevitable sadness. Grounding his story in the tragic love of teenagers allows Shakespeare to evoke in audiences a sense of empathy for his characters whilst emphasising the beauty within the language he uses to express such love and tragedy.

Paragraph1 Example - What level would this get? Why? How could it be improved? P (TS): Shakespeare shows the friendship between Romeo and Mercutio by the sacrifice of Mercutio. Q: “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man” A: This line shows the relationship between Mercutio and Romeo. Mercutio says that Romeo will find him a “grave” man when when he was stabbed by Tybalt under Romeo’s arm. Normal friends will not choose to sacrifice themselves to save a person, they would need to be a very close friend to be able to do that. Although this could also be interpreted as Mercutio not really caring about his life as much as his love for for his friend because he appeared to be joking about his own injury, “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.”
Paragraph2 Example - What level would this get? Why? How could it be improved? P (TS): In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows many different types of love. E: Mercutio shows love for his friend, Romeo by “taking a bullet” for him, when Tybalt wanted to kill Romeo, he killed Mercutio instead. E: Shakespeare also shows love romantically between Romeo and Juliet. The night before Romeo’s exile is a great example, since Juliet is going to fake death, there will be a possibility that they will never see each other again, they use this scene to show their love from each other. Romeo loves using metaphors to express himself, he describes Juliet with words of beauty, “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” Romeo is referring to Juliet as the sun since the sun brings life to the earth, without the sun nothing on earth would exist. Romeo could not live without the sun, Romeo couldn’t live without Juliet either.
