Kia OraWinery Masters Thesis Introduction By: Karisa Masson
The location for this thesis project will be New Zealand because I wanted to choose a site which I was very unfamiliar with so that over the research process I would become more Knowledgeable. After choosing my location and researching it, I decided to select a winery for my typology because the wine industry is one of the fastest growing in New Zealand with quality improving vastly in the last decade. I also chose this typology because of the versatility of extra typologies that I can include in the range of hospitality, retail and others like a gallery , I also want to find ways in which the facility can improve the local economy while celebrating the culture of the local area. Location and Typology
New Zealand, is dominated by two cultural groups: New Zealanders of European descent, and the minority Maori • Māori visual art consists primarily of carving, tattooing, weaving and painting, it was rare for any of these to be purely decorative. • Traditional Māori art was highly spiritual and in a pre-literate society conveyed information about spiritual matters, ancestry, and other culturally important topics. • More recently, artist are blending elements of Māori culture with European modernism • Social organization was largely communal with families, sub-tribes and tribes ruled by a chief whose position was subject to the community's approval. • Agriculture (Wool, Dairy, wine) is the economic mainstay, but manufacturing and tourism are important and there is a world-class film industry.
