L.O. To revise the use of adverbs and adjectives in creative writing Starter: • What are nouns? • What are verbs? • What are adjectives? • What are adverbs? Write a sentence containing an adjective and an adverb Underline the noun, the verb, the adjective and the adverb in your completed sentence
Alternative starter: Play ‘Consequences’ around the classroom • One person acts as ‘scribe’ • Class stand up • Teacher starts: The… • Next three people have to find three adjectives • The next person has to add a noun and so on… For example: The short, fat, hairy man went to the busy, expensive, posh shopping centre.
Reminder: • Nouns – the name of any animal, person, place or thing. For example: House, car, dog, banana, garden, man • Adjectives – describe a noun. For example: I picked a beautifulrose. • Verbs – ‘doing’ words. For example: Running, reading, cycling • Adverbs – describe a verb. For example:He spoke quickly.
Next steps: • Now you are going to work in groups to practise using adjectives and adverbs • Remember: Use the dictionary and thesaurus on your desk to help you to find exciting synonyms – be adventurous in your vocabulary
Group One: Task: Create sentences containing adjectives and nouns to describe these figures.(You will need to use verbs as well!)
Group Two: Task: Create sentences containing adjectives and nouns to describe the house and garden. (You will need to use verbs as well!)
Group Three: Task: Create sentences containing adverbs and verbs to describe what the man and the woman do and how they feel and behave. (You will need to use nouns as well!)
Now let’s put it all together: You should have: • A description of what the man and the woman look like • A description of the house and garden • A description of what the man and woman are doing and how they are feeling and behaving Work in groups to put your sentences together in complete paragraphs Check that it makes sense and make any necessary corrections Try to vary your sentence structure. For example, start some of the sentences with an adverb: For example: Lovingly, the woman looked at her husband. Feedback to the class: Read out your completed sentences to the class
