  1. What You Need to Know About NGOs Working on Nutrition in India

  2. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are non-profit organisations that operate independently of national or government authorities. They usually address a specific social problem and work towards solving it without the support of governments or corporations. While there are thousands of NGOs working in India, this article focuses on those that are actively working on fighting problems with nutrition in the country. Nutrition is a general term used to refer to the types and amounts of food we eat, as well as our body’s ability to digest and use those foods. The diet of an individual or population is their typical intake of food and drink. Globally, malnutrition among adults has been identified as the twin pandemic along with obesity. This article looks at best healthcare NGOs in India working specifically on combating issues around nutrition in India. What Are the Common Issues with Nutrition in India? More than half of Indian women are anaemic and the national average for stunting among children under 5 years of age is 48%. The national average for underweight children is 36%. A country’s diet, and the associated health impacts, are often a product of a number of factors including poverty, access to clean water and sanitation, as well as the type of food that is locally grown or produced. Therefore, we can expect to see different issues with nutrition in different regions of India. If we look at the nutrition data for India, we can see that there are three general categories of issues that can be identified: Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA), Malnutrition due to poor feeding practices, and Micronutrient Deficiencies (MCD). IDA is caused by a deficiency of iron in the body. Iron is an essential mineral that is needed to make red blood cells. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. IDA can cause fatigue and affect a person’s ability to concentrate. Malnutrition caused by poor feeding practices can result in stunted growth. Stunting refers to the fact that a child’s height is significantly lower than would be expected for their age. It is often a sign that a child did not receive the right amount of nutrients while they were growing up. Underweight children may also be stunted. Micronutrient deficiencies can cause a wide range of health problems. For example, Vitamin A deficiency is linked to blindness and infectious diseases. Iodine deficiency is associated with mental retardation in children. Iron deficiency anaemia and zinc deficiency are associated with poor growth and cognitive development. WaSH and its Effects NGOs working on Nutrition in India have also identified ‘WASH’ stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. WASH is one of the most important public health issues in

  3. India. Poor WASH practices are one of the largest contributors to the high rate of malnutrition found in India. The main reason for this is that many people in India do not have access to clean water for drinking and sanitation for hygiene. This leads to many people getting sick with diarrhoea, a very common infectious disease that causes frequent bowel movements, stomach cramps, and vomiting. Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of malnutrition in India. When someone has diarrhoea, they are likely to lose water from their body in the form of frequent urination, vomiting, and stool. If a child has diarrhoea, they are likely to lose even more fluids and become severely dehydrated. A child who is severely dehydrated may end up in the hospital to get intravenous fluids to help keep them alive. Maternity and Nutrition Pregnant women need to pay special attention to the types of food they eat and the amounts of nutrients they get. This is because the growing baby needs proper nutrition and is dependent on the mother’s diet to get those nutrients. While all women need to be careful about their nutrition during pregnancy, this is especially important for women who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Nutritional care and counselling should be provided during pregnancy. This can help women meet their nutritional requirements while they are pregnant and can also help women improve their diets after their child is born. Pregnant women who are malnourished are at a higher risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. In fact, malnutrition during pregnancy can reduce the amount of iron in the blood, which can lead to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in the mother and IDA or other problems in the child. Iron deficiency in the child’s body can cause problems with the child’s growth and development. It can also lead to an increased risk of infections, such as pneumonia. Conclusion There are a number of best healthcare NGOs in India working to raise awareness about nutrition, as well as provide nutritional care to those who need it most. These organisations are actively working to combat the issues of IDA, malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. Nutrition is an important part of health, and it is crucial that people receive the proper amount of nutrients in their diet. If you are interested in helping to improve the lives of those in need, consider volunteering for an NGO that works to improve nutrition in India.
