Defender Turret Based Defense System Brian Bentz Kirk Iler Stephen Wolf FuheXu
Packaging Constraints • Portability – Defender should be easily moved and installed. • Weight – lightweight to allow possible mounting on the ceiling. • EMI resistant – To protect circuitry from strong fields present in coil gun. • Broad Firing Range – Must be able to target over a broad area. • Keypad – Must be easily accessible.
Commercial Products • Sentry Project Turret System • TRT-25MM, or the Tactical Remote Turret (TRT).
Sentry Project Turret System • Positive Aspects: • Portable and light. • Semi and full auto firing ability. • Movement detection. • Automated firing. • Interfaces with any triggered weapon. • Negative Aspects: • Cannot interface with a coil gun. • Must remain stationary to operate. • No EMI protection.
Tactical Remote Turret (TRT) • Positive Aspects • Adapts to a number of different weapons. • Operable during the day and at night. • Operable while moving. • Simple user interface (“Game Boy Controls”) • Negative Aspects • Very expensive. • Very heavy – over 1000 pounds. • Meant for the field, not a security compound.
Packaging Layout • Four major physical components: • Base: Divided metal box containing control circuitry, high voltage capacitors, and power supply. • Rotator: Uses stepper motors to aim the Coil Gun; Mounted on top of Base. • Coil Gun: Mounted on top of the Rotator. • Camera: Mounted on top of the base.
