  1. Energy Transformations But what about the wind?

  2. Where Does Wind Energy Come From?

  3. Where Does Wind Energy Come From? Wind energy is an indirect form of solar energy. Between 1 - 2% of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth is converted into energy in the wind.

  4. That’s about 50 to 100 times the energy that is converted from all the plants on earth through photosynthesis!

  5. But what makes wind? Winds result from an unequal heating of different parts of the Earth's surface, causing cooler dense air to circulate to replace warmer, lighter air. http://teachingboxes.org/jsp/teachingboxes/weatherEssentials/wind/sequence/lesson3_activity1.jsp

  6. Radiant (Solar) Energy Warms land and water

  7. Radiant (Solar) Energy Warms land and water Thermal Energy—but the warming is not even

  8. If the land is warmer than the water it makes Radiant (Solar) Energy Warms land and water Thermal Energy

  9. Radiant (Solar) Energy Warms land and water If the land is warmer than the water Motion Energy Thermal Energy

  10. Making Wind Work for Us—Windmills come in all shapes

  11. and all sizes

  12. Windmill Components

  13. Windmills and energy transformation 1. Solar (Radiant) Energy warms the earth (Thermal Energy)

  14. Windmills and energy transformation 1. Solar (Radiant) Energy warms the earth (Thermal Energy) 2. Thermal Energy makes warm air rise Cooler air moves in to replace the warm air And you have WIND—Motion Energy

  15. Windmills and energy transformation 3. Wind moves the blades which spin the shaft and the turbine (more Motion Energy) 1. Solar (Radiant) Energy warms the earth (Thermal Energy) 2. Thermal Energy makes warm air rise Cooler air moves in to replace the warm air And you have WIND—Motion Energy

  16. Windmills and energy transformation 3. Wind moves the blades which spin the shaft and the turbine (more Motion Energy) 1. Solar (Radiant) Energy warms the earth (Thermal Energy) 2. Thermal Energy makes warm air rise Cooler air moves in to replace the warm air And you have WIND—Motion Energy 4. The spinning turbine makes Electrical Energy

  17. Bringing electrical energy to our homes, schools and businesses…

  18. Your Challenge… Transform wind into electrical energy
