Lee Carseldine – The Bio Born November 17 1975, in Nambour, Queensland, Lee Carseldine is a true veteran of cricket.A top order left-handed batsman and medium-pace bowler, he graduated from the Australian Cricket Academy and made his First Class debut in the 1998-99 season with the Queensland Bulls. He truly hit his stride in the 2002-03 season where he compiled 709 first class runs at 44.31, including one century and five fifties. Lee soldiered through 24 First Class games with the Bulls, whilst battling chronic back pain, however in 2004, scans revealed sever stress fractures along his spine, and there were doubts Lee would ever walk properly again. After countless operations, a further blow to his recovery was a debilitating bout of septicaemia (blood poisoning). However, always noted for his outstanding fitness and resolve, he overcame all odds in his achievement in being able to walk again. Even so, most believed it was highly unlikely he would ever play the sport again. Incredibly though, after almost three years out, Lee began to fill in for the Thirds in 2007. From there, he just kept going, earning the nickname “Man of Titanium”. By the 2007-08 season, Lee had been recalled into the Queensland Bulls First Class side: an inspirational feat that left many simply gobsmacked. In 2008-09 he finished the year with an incredible amount of accolades and an IPL contract to boot, with many previous sceptics quietly disappointed for Lee that he didn’t make the Australian T20 side. He was the KFC TwentyTwenty Big Bash Bulls’ Player of the Year, collected the prestigious Ian Healy Trophy, and also the Players’ Player of the Year silverware. Not only that, he was named in the Sheffield Shield Team of the Year and also in the Ford Ranger Cup & KFC Big Bash Team of the Year. Not bad really, for a man some thought would never walk properly again. To cap it all off, he caught the eye of the Indian Premier League selectors and was offered a contract with the Rajasthan Royals. After enjoying his stint overseas with the IPL T20 Royals side, Lee decided to become a T20 ‘freelancer’. After representing the Queensland Heat in 2011, Lee was then called into the Adelaide Strikers team for the 2011-12 KFC Big Bash when Kieron Pollard pulled out due to a hamstring injury. Slowly, painfully anf successfully, he recovered and on Friday night capped his unbelieveable rise with the Ian Healy Trophy as Queensland’s player of the year. The tale is so impressive Matthew Hayden thinks a movie should be made about it. "The last time I had a good chance to see Lee was in Melbourne when he was lying paralysed from the waist down and was basically on death's door," Hayden said. Carseldine and South African Twenty20 allrounder Johan Botha will form a pivotal part of Strikers coach Darren Berry's plan B for the Big Bash League opener against Melbourne Renegades at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Cooper struck an undefeated 182 for the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI against India in Canberra yesterday and is unavailable for the Strikers. The big news was West Indian favourite Pollard's hamstring strain while fielding in an internal trial at Park 25 yesterday. Lee Carseldine - The Press Lee Carseldine, Shane Harwood, Rob Quiney win IPL contracts AAP February 15th 2009 QUEENSLAND'S Lee Carseldine and Victorian pair Shane Harwood and Rob Quiney have signed for reigning Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals. The signings were announced by the Royals' director of coaching and former Victorian captain Darren Berry in India on Saturday, and will see the trio link up with captain-coach Shane Warne and fellow Australians Shane Watson and Shaun Tait… Berry said Carseldine's outstanding form in the 2008-09 Twenty20 series, combined with his performances in all forms of the game this season, warranted an opportunity. Berry said the 33-year-old Queensland left-hander could well prove to be the surprise packet of the IPL. "He is a mature player who has overcome serious injury to be now given an opportunity to ply his craft in India," said Berry. Carseldine has made a successful comeback to first class cricket this season after a serious back complaint almost ended his career in 2004. Lee Carseldine – Off the Field • Lee made the most of his time away from the sport, gaining an MBA in applied finance as well as becoming a lifeguard while running a local gym. • He remains happily married to his wife Tanya, who was a constant pillar of support throughout his ordeal. • Lee is proud of his achievements, is admired by countless people and is described as “just a wonderful bloke”.
