  2. The paragraphs of the essay that follow the introduction should support, or prove, the thesis. These body paragraphs: • Should include examples from the text that illustrate the thesis. • Should include commentary on, or explanations of, the examples. • Should include commentary that ties everything back to the thesis. • Should be written in standard paragraph format, including a topic sentence and a concluding sentence. • Should include transitions that tie sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph.

  3. Body paragraphs should: • Not include summaries of the novel, such as you would find in a book report. • Not be event by event playbacks of the plot. • Not be an evaluation of the book, such as you would find in a book review.

  4. Number the Starsby Lois Lowry • Thesis: The main character of Number the Stars, Annemarie Johansen, is a hero because she saves her friend from a tragic fate through her quick thinking and courage, and because she does so selflessly.

  5. About Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry: Ten year old Annemarie Johansen helps her best friend Ellen Rosen escape from the Nazis because she is quick-witted and courageous. For example, when the Nazi soldiers come to the Johansen apartment in search of the Rosens, Annemarie remembers that Ellen always wears a Star of David necklace, swiftly snatches the locket from her friend’s neck, and hides the locket in her clenched fist before the soldiers enter the bedroom in which they are sleeping. Her actions show that even in a frightening moment, Annemarie can think of solutions instantly and bravely carry out a plan. If she had not done so, the soldiers would have discovered that Ellen was really one of the Rosens and not Annemarie’s sister Lise.

Another example of Annemarie’s quick thinking and courage is when she is on her way to Uncle Henrik’s boat with the secret package from the Resistance, is stopped by Nazi soldiers, and has to pretend that her uncle’s lunch is in the basket. Again, she hurriedly comes up with a brilliant, fearless way to avoid discovery. If she had not done so, the Jews hiding on her uncle’s boat, including Ellen Rosen, would have been found by the Nazis. For these reasons, Annemarie Johansen should be considered a hero for her quick thinking and courage during the Holocaust.
