Introduction-1 • Paul was instructing the christians at Corinth concerning spiritual gifts • Miraculous abilities listed in 12:8-10 • Available to christians in the 1st century • Possessed by some at Corinth • Given for the profit of all- V7 • Paul said there was a more excellent way • That is the way of love described in chapter 13
Introduction-2 • Biblical love (agape) is not a good feeling or emotion • Love toward God is a genuine desire to please Him • Demonstrated by obedience to His word- Jn. 14:15 • Love for others is an active pursuit of what is best for them • Love is the great commandment in Law- Mt. 22:37-40 • Love is the sum and spirit of God’s will for us • Love is shown by one’s actions • Let us notice some things that love will do
Love Benefits All • Spiritual gifts did not profit those who had them without love- V1-2 • It is possible to use our God-given abilities today, and do good things for others without gaining any personal benefit • Because the good is done from a wrong motive • Pharisees desired praise of other people- Mt. 23:5 & Mt. 6:1 • Paul said it could happen to him- V1-3 • But love makes our gifts and sacrifices pleasing to God • And He will bless and reward us for the good done
Love Provides the Right Attitude-1 • Love promotes the right values • It rejoices in the truth and finds no enjoyment in unrighteousness- V6 • Love is humble • It doesn’t show off and is not puffed up- V4 • God hates pride- Prov. 6:17 • The citizens of Christ’s kingdom will be poor in spirit- Mt. 5:3 • Love does not think evil of others- V5 • Love causes us to see the good in other people
Love Provides the Right Attitude-2 • It will prevent unjust suspicions and prejudicial judgments- Jn. 7:24 • Love is unselfish • It does not seek (only) its own- V5 • It puts others before self- Phil 2:4 • It is not envious of what other have- V4 • Love is patient and longsuffering with others- V4 • As God is with us- II Pet. 3:9 • It bears all things and endures all things- V7
Love Will Cause Us To Be Kind to Others • It will not allow us to do harm to others- Rom. 13 :10 • Even when they have harmed us • But causes us to treat them as we want to be treated- Mt. 7:12 & Jas. 2:8 • It will not behave rudely or in a shameful way- V5 • But is kind to others- V4 • In words as well as actions- Prov. 31:26
Love Overcomes Evil • Jesus said we are to love our enemies- Mt. 5:44 • Paul exhorted christians to live at peace with all men and not to seek vengeance on those who do evil to us- Rom. 12:17-19 • Rather he says we ought to do good to them- V20 • May cause them to change their mind and their ways • Love will overcome evil with good in our heart and our life even if our enemy doesn’t change
Love Makes Us Partakers of the Divine Nature • Love is a prominent characteristic of God- I Jn. 4:8 • His love is seen in the things He has created for us to enjoy • It is seen in the providential care • And the blessings that he provides daily • Even for those who are His enemies- Mt. 5:45 • But, the greatest evidence of God’s love is seen in Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins- Rom. 5:8
Love Never Fails • The word in V8 (katargeo) means to be done away with or to cease • The miraculous gifts were provided to christians in the infancy of the church • They have served their purpose and passed away- V8 • But love remains today • It is needed as much now as in the past • It will remain when faith has given way to sight and we are enjoying the things for which we have hoped- V13
In Conclusion • Love is a prominent characteristic of our Heavenly Father • It should the guiding principle in the lives of all His children • Love is the bond of perfection- Col. 3:14 • Love will make us better people • It will improve every relationship we have in this life • Are you walking in love this morning?- Jn. 14 :15
