Mission Founders The two people who founded the mission were Francisco Palóu and JuníperoSerra (JuníperoSerraisatthe top left and Francisco Palóuisatthebottomrightcorner)
Mission Established The San Francisco de Asis mission was founded on October 9, 1776. It is the oldest structure that still stands today in San Francisco. The mission’s full name is La Misión de Nuestro Padre San Francisco de Asis. The mission was named for Saint Francis of Assisi who was the founder of the Franciscan Order. The mission’s nickname is Mission Dolores because of the nearby creek named Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. Mission Dolores is now the intersection of Dolores and 16th Streets.
Mission Agriculture Mission Dolores grew and harvested 87,000 grains and produce. Their primary crops were wheat, barley, corn, beans and peas. They also raised sheep and horses.
Mission Life Many people lived at the mission like Costanoan Indians and soldiers. The Costanoan Indian’s job was to take care of the mission and the soldier’s job was to protect the presidio which was a military settlement. At sunrise, the people and Catholic priests attended a mass. After they went to church, The adults went to work. They plowed fields, made bricks, made olive oil and raised livestock.
Mission Tradition The people of the mission gathered and danced on Sundays when service was over. Half of the men adorn themselves with feathers and belts ornamented with feathers and pieces of shell. They also paint their bodies with regular lines of black, red and white. Then those men dance in groups of six or eight all together. They make the same movements while holding spears.
People of the Mission Most people that lived at Mission Dorles were Native Americans from different tribes. Some of these people were from tribes like Coast Miwok, Patwin and the Costanoans. Some of these Native Americans were soldiers.
Mission Geography Mission Dolores is located at the northeastern part of California. The address to the place is 3321 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94114. Mission Dolores is near the coast. The mission was made out of adobe bricks. There were rows of buildings placed around a patio for an infirmary, granary, workshops, storerooms and living quarters.
