CITY’S CREST There is a legend about the city’s crest, from the time of swedish wars. City was under siege - the defenders didn’t want to surrender. Swedish army decided to starve the citizens closed inside city walls. Those inside had only one sack of flour left - but came with an idea to blow the flour wih the wind, and by that show, that they have plenty of food. THE MOST DISTANT HISTORY Up to XIIIth century those were lands inhabited by a tribe called Warms. They located a city - Melcekuke . Teutonic Order arrived here at that time, destroyed the city, killed or enslaved the people in it. It was until 1466 that Pieniężno remained in the hands of Teutons. Then it was Polish - until 1772. COPERNICUS Copernicus was an important person in the history of this city. He published his famous theory in writing, „De Revolutionibus..“ in nearby Frombork. He often visited and stayed in Pieniężno, as he was appointed the landlord. FUNDATION LOCAL ACTIVITY GROUPPARTNERSHIP FOR WARMIA
RAILWAY AND THE BRIDGE In 1772 Poland was divided between three opressors and was erased from the maps of Europe. Warmia became part of Prussia. The end of XIXth century was time of rapid industrial development of the city. It got railway connections and the highest railway bridge, one that is still in use. BEFORE WORLD WAR II In the years between WW I and II Pieniężno became a stron centre of commerce and craft. There were: 3 brickyards, 16 groceries, 1 big depot, 9 textile shops, 5 shoe shops, 4 gallantery shops, 4 metal articles shops, 1 construction materials depot, 5 fuel stocks, 3 drug stores, 3 book shops, 3 hotels, 1 cinema, 2 confectioneries FUNDATION LOCAL ACTIVITY GROUPPARTNERSHIP FOR WARMIA
PIENIĘŻNO DURING WW II Between 1939-1945 Pieniężno was a German city. Lots of people fought worldwide on many front lines, many people not only from Poland were made to work for the oppresors in labour camps. WAR DAMAGE In winter of 1945 the Soviet Army came close to the borders of the city. Very strong and damaging battles took place than. gaulaiter Koch made PIenieżno his stronghold - so it suffered a lot, mostly from Soviet air forces, that bombed the city constantly, causing great damage, destroying almost 90% of it. FIRST YEARS AFTER THE WAR Springtime of 1945. The city was empty and in ruins. a few people stayed here or returned. Starting in 1946 the great deed of rebuilding the city was initiated.
