1.1 Time & Distance Unit 1 Chapter 1 CPO Science Courtney Lewis Stapley Junior High School
Introduction • Learn about how things change with time • Humans and growth • Geographical landscape—erosion, i.e. The Grand Canyon • Races/competition
Measurements Properties of Universe Length Units 3 Dimensions, measured in length Time creates past, present, & future English System—inches, feet, yards Metric System—meters, centimeters, kilometers
Relative Lengths Distance Measuring • Short distances use smaller units like in, cm, m • Long distances use larger units like km or miles • amount of space between two things, points, lines • English System: • Inches (in), feet (ft), or yards (yd) • Inches usually divided into 1/8ths or 1/16ths
Metric System: • centimeters (cm) or meters (m) • Smallest unit on meter stick usually the millimeter (mm) • Equivalencies: • 1000 mm = 100 cm = 1 m • milli = 1000 • centi = 100
Time ways to view Measuring • A particular moment— “What time is it?” • Interval of time– “How long have we been in this class?” • usually in seconds • Equivalencies: • 1 hour = 60 min = 3600 seconds
Many ways to measure same thing Units created so everyone’s idea of a unit of measure is the same Science uses METRIC SYSTEM! (they are easier to work with—factors/powers of ten) Metric system is official system of US Show me a meter! Show me a gram!
