  1. Glazing,UnderglazingOverview of requirements and techniques

  2. Definitions • Glaze is a layer or coating of a vitreous substance which has been fused to a ceramic object through firing and oiling. Glaze can serve to colour, decorate, strengthen or waterproof an item.[ • Ceramic glazes generally contain silica to form glass, in combination with a mixture of metal oxides • Underglaze is a method of decorating ceramic articles, the decoration is applied to the surface before it is glazed.. It uses pigments derived from oxides which fuse with the glaze when the piece is fired in a kiln.

  3. Glazing, underglazing process • Do NOT glaze the bottom of the object-or any part that will touch the kiln floor or shelve-it will melt and stick to the kiln. The only way to remove it is by smashing your project with a hammer. • Wipe bottom of object with a damp spongebefore placing on glaze fire shelve. • Run project under water to clean and remove dust, glaze could chip off otherwise. Wait until project is dry to paint. • Apply three even coats of glaze. • Do NOT overlap or mix glazes. Clean all brushes or glazes can become contaminated. • Underglaze must be covered with 3 coats of clear transparent glaze. • Underglazes can be mixed and overlapped like paint. You may apply one to three coats of underglaze. • Glaze interior of the objects. • Glazes and Underglazes can be wiped off with a damp sponge or paper towel.

  4. Classroom glazing rules • Only use the bottle with a OK label. Share the container if using the same color. Glaze will dry out when container is open. • Do NOT paint from lid or cup-paint from the container. • Shake bottle before use with lid on tightly. • Look at test plate for true color>> • Put newspaper under object when glazing. Do NOT use tablecloths when glazing. • Put container back in correct spot.

  5. Project Requirements for glazing Lantern-you may only use glazes for this project. Exterior must be in earthtones only. The following are considered acceptable earthtones-ivory beige, autumn leaf, tiger eye, sandstone, sand, dove gray, moss agate, mottled orange, dark yellow, granite Interior must be in a bright light color such as yellow, white, clear, orange. Mug- interior may be underglazed with 3 coats of clear. If you use glaze on the interior do NOT use more than 2 different glazes because glaze may pool and bleed. Keep exterior painting design very simple. Texture container-Clear and black glaze only, in any combination. Interior must be glazed, exterior may remain raw bisque white.
