  1. Thesis prize for protein pressure freezing Chae Un Kim (Cornell, NY),DMR-0225180 Broader Impacts: Graduate student Chae Un Kim was awarded the 2008 CHESS Ph.D. Thesis prize for developing a new technique for cryofreezing protein crystals using high-pressure. Protein crystals are routinely frozen so they can be studied by x-rays, an essential technique in the biomedical sciences. Freezing under pressure prevents the water inside the protein from freezing and fracturing the protein lattice. Kim showed that freezing crystals after raising them to 1.9 kbar eliminates the need for cryoprotectant additives and results in higher quality diffraction data, thereby greatly facilitating the acquisition of high-quality protein structures. Chae Un Kim receiving award from Marian Szebenyi, organizer of the 2008 CHESS Users’ Meeting. The diffraction pattern of an L-amino-acid oxidase crystal with no cryocooling (left) and using the new method (right) produced much higher resolution data.
