  2. July Ultimatum • Consequence of assassination of Franz Ferdinand (June 28, 1914) • Austria-Hungary is upset • A-H delivers a list of ten demands of Serbia • Given 48 hours to respond, or else…

  3. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 1. To suppress every publication which shall incite hatred and contempt of the Monarchy [Austria-Hungary], and the general tendency of which shall be directed against the territorial integrity of the latter

  4. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 2. …to confiscate all means of propaganda, and in the same manner dissolve other unions and associations in Serbia which occupy themselves with propaganda against Austria-Hungary The Royal Government will take necessary measure to make sure that dissolved associations may not continue their activities

  5. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 3. To eliminate from public instruction in Serbia, everything connected with teaching that serves to nourish propaganda against Austria-Hungary

  6. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 4. To remove from the military all officials who have been guilty of propaganda against Austria-Hungary, whose names the Imperial Government [Austria-Hungary] reserves the right to make known to the Royal Government [Serbia]

  7. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 5. To agree to the cooperation in Serbia of the organs of the Imperial and Royal Government in the suppression of the subversive movement directed against the integrity of the Monarchy [Austria-Hungary]

  8. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 6. To institute a judicial inquiry against every participant in the conspiracy of June 28, 1914 who may be found in Serbia The organs of the Imperial and Royal Government delegated for this purpose will take part in the proceedings for this purpose

  9. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 7. To undertake the arrest of Major VoislavTankosic and Milan Ciganovitch, a Serbian official, who have been compromised by the results of the inquiry

  10. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 8. Prevent the participation of Serbian authorities in the smuggling of weapons and explosives across the frontier, To punish severely those members of the Frontier [border] Service who assisted the authors of the crime of Sarajevo

  11. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 9. To make explanations to the Imperial and Royal Government concerning the unjustifiable utterances of Serbian officials abroad who have not hesitated to express themselves in a manner hostile toward Austria-Hungary since the assassination on June 28, 1914

  12. The Serbian Government will pledge itself 10. To inform the Imperial and Royal Government without delay of the execution of the measures comprised in the foregoing points. The Imperial and Royal Government [A-H] awaits the reply of the Royal Government [Serbia] by Saturday, July 25, 1914, 6 pm at the latest

  13. Serbian Response July 23, Serbian Regent, Crown Prince Alexander, visited a Russian diplomat to "express his despair over the Austrian ultimatum, compliance with which he regards as an absolute impossibility for a state which had the slightest regard for its dignity"
