  2. Boston Tea Party When: December 16th, 1773 Who: The Sons of Liberty Why: Parliament had tried to help the East India Tea Company by passing the Tea Act. This cut merchants out of the loop and left the tax on tea. Where: Boston, Massachusetts Result: Britain is furious and passes the intolerable acts. First Continental Congress braces for war!!!

July 4th, 1776

  7. Early Battles of the Revolution Battle of Bunker Hill When: June16th, 1775 Who: Colonel Prescott & the minutemen V. General Howe & the Redcoats Why: The minutemen had dug in trenches on this strategically placed hill over looking Boston harbor. The British wished to remove them from their position Where: Breeds Hill Boston, Massachusetts Result: The first major battle of the Revolution showed that the Americans would fight bravely, but the British would not be easy to defeat!

  8. Fighting in the Middle States Battle of Trenton When: December 26th, 1776 Who:Continental Army v. Hessians Why:Washington felt the element of surprise was critical in defeating the Hessians. He led his army across the icy Delaware river on Christmas night in order to surprise the Hessians the next morning! Where: Trenton, New Jersey Result: The Americans pitched a shut out as the entire city of Trenton was captured without a single American casualty. It was the first victory for the continentals.

  9. Turning Point of the War Battle of Saratoga When: October 17th, 1777 Who:Continental Army v. Gen. Burgoyne & the British Why:Gen. Burgoyne had a plan to cut off the northern colonies and secure British victory in the north, eliminating the main threat. Where: Saratoga, New York Result: Gen. Burgoyne’s plan backfired and the entire northern British army was captured by the Americans. This was the main turning point in the war and led to the French agreeing to help us with troops and ships.

  10. The Winter of 1777-1778 • Some slept in damp and drafty huts • Most slept on the frozen ground • Warm clothing was scarce • Most wrapped in blankets • Cloth wraps substituted for shoes • Frostbite and disease were rampant Valley Forge

  12. War in the West George Rogers Clark Most Native Americans fought with the British, however Clark was able to secure the west for the Patriots when he captured Fort Vincennes.

  13. War in the South Yorktown King’s Mt.. Cornwallis At Yorktown the British could not retreat, bottled up by Washington and the French fleet, Cornwallis surrendered and finally we had won!!! Ferguson

  14. Women in the War Many women helped during the war, although at this point in time they were limited at what was acceptable and what was not. Some women fought under disguises or simply would not take no for an answer. Most helped as nurses or cooks. Martha Washington Phyllis Wheatley Molly Pitcher

  15. The Finish of the War When defeat was imminent Gen. Cornwallis sent a subordinate in his place to surrender. He was disgusted and in denial that these rebels had won. The British band played the song entitled, “The World Turned Upside Down”. This was the beginning of the end of the British empire, their world would never be the same. Treaty of Paris April 15th, 1783
