Diabetes Diabetes mellitus, or diabetes, is a disease that prevents the body from converting food into energy. • To get energy from food, the body must break it down into glucose, a simple sugar. • To transport glucose into cells, the body needs insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates the level of glucose in the blood. • In people with diabetes, glucose cannot enter cells. Instead it builds up in the bloodstream, causing many health problems.
Types of Diabetes Type 1 diabetes usually develops during childhood or adolescence. • In this type, the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. • The pancreas then produces little or no insulin to balance the glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity and lack of physical activity. More and more young people are developing the disease. • This type occurs because the body is unable to use effectively the insulin it produces. • After several years, the body’s production of insulin decreases.
