What is it? A mental health literacy program for junior sporting clubs aiming to: • Increase knowledge and awareness of mental health problems and alcohol and drug use • Increase knowledge about local support services • Increase confidence and help seeking behaviours
Background to the Kempe“Read the Play” Program David Langley (KempeGroup -a Geelong based national company) identified the need for education on mental health and help seeking for young people. Approached sporting clubs (football & netball) and Barwon Health in 2005. Obtained sponsorship from The Kempe Group, Buckleys, Bendigo Bank,G21 and the GPA Geelong . ORYGEN Youth Health developed the first version, 2006. Annual evaluation lead to total change of the program content and delivery in 2009. The writer/developer of the current program is Education Officer at headspace Barwon. The resulting interactive games program and simplified approach has been hugely successful
Structure of the Program 1. Clubs nominate a Club Player Wellbeing Officers 2. Wellbeing Officers attend interactive training night 3. Read the Play games night at club • Wellbeing Officer and local mental health workers co-deliver • Club receives free mental health resource • Mental health worker consistent resource and support 4. Payment • Mental health workers paid for presentation work
The Program Target Group – Under 16 years Year 1, Kit 1 • Focus - conversation about mental health • Know what to say? Year 2, Kit 2 Focus - help seeking behaviours. • Know the way! • Suicide prevention “Speak up, Speak Out and Protect!”
Delivery • Fun!! • Duration: Approx. 1hour and 15 minutes • Competitive, teams oriented • Large visual scoreboard • All games centred • Prizes

Program Achievement Reach 2011: • 33 Clubs • 47 sessions. • Approx 1,350 kids exposed to program Evaluation Surveys - Participants • increased knowledge of mental health • Increased awareness of mental health services. • increased confidence in accessing help if needed. ***Strong likelihood that this will translate into improved help-seeking behaviour and improved mental health outcomes for young people.
