Starry Night This painting is known for it’s intense swirling energy. What is the big black shape in the foreground? What colors do you see? What do the swirly lines remind you of? How does it make you feel?
This painting is of a scene that he saw from his window. Although it is a nighttime scene, it was painted from memory during the day. It features a scene of a Dutch-looking town. It is mainly composed of stars, town structures, rolling hills, and a bright crescent moon. A mysterious entity is then shown in the left foreground. It can be interpreted in different ways depending on who is viewing it. Starry Night is widely viewed as the greatest of all of Vincent Van Gogh's works.
ACTIVITY Using a pencil, students are to draw their own cactus or bush on the left side of the paper in a curvy shape. Behind that draw several simple hills. In the sky draw several stars and a moon in circular fashion. You may add to your sky using dashes & swirls in colors of white, yellow & blue.
