  3. What is an arichpelago? a chain or cluster of islands.

  4. What is an ocean? one of the five major bodies of salt water that surround the continents

  5. What is an island? land area, smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water

  6. What is a cape? point of land that extends into a river, lake, or ocean

  7. What is an isthmus? a narrow stretch of land connecting two larger land areas

  8. What is a bay? part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline generally smaller than a gulf

  9. What is a peninsula? body of land jutting into a lake or ocean, surrounded on three sides by water

  10. What is a sea? large body of water completely or partly surrounded by land

  11. What is a river? large natural stream of water that runs through the land

  12. What is a delta? • delta – flat , low lying land built up from soil carried downstream by a river and deposited at it mouth

  13. What is a tributary? • tributary* -- A small river or stream that flows into a large river or stream; a branch of the river

  14. What is a gulf? part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline; larger than a bay

  15. What is a strait? narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water

  16. What is a basin? area of land drained by a given river and its branches; area of land surrounded by lands of higher elevations

  17. What is a plain? area of level land, usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses

  18. What is a hill? elevated land with sloping sides and rounded summit generally smaller than a mountain

  19. What is a mesa? broad, flat-topped landform with steep sides; smaller than a plateau

  20. What is a plateau? area of flat or rolling land at a high elevation, about 300-3,000 feet high.

  22. What is a mountain range? a series of connected mountains
