  5. High Lights • Nixon begins his campaign as Southern California’s 12th congressional district. • He proves that Hiss was a soviet spy in the Alger Hiss case, and that gained the national attention he needed for a reelection. • Nixon gains a seat in the senate after winning the election against Helen Douglas. • Because Nixon was known to be a legit anti-communist, he became Eisenhower’s vice president as a Republican. • He runs for president against J.F.K. in 1960 but loses. • Nixon finally becomes president in the elections of 1968

  6. Domestic Policy Issues • Nixon also made America’s wealth depend on the dollar rather than gold in the treasury because the American dollar was overpriced and was worth more than all the gold that America possessed. • He supported desegregation and felt that racism was America’s moral failure • Nixon endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment and Equal Employment Opportunity act

  7. Foreign Policy • The war in Vietnam still left many American citizens cynical. He ended the draft and pulled all the troops back by 1975. • He also created the Nixon Doctrine so the South Vietnamese could fend for themselves. • The policy eventually spread to other countries and America could worry less. • The Cold war was still so very Cold, but Nixon began the end of it by creating relations with Soviet Russia. • Nixon also created relations with China • In conclusion, Nixon’s presidential role improved America’s relationship with many foreign nations.

  8. Success and Failures Success Failures Attacked Laos and Cambodia which led to unwanted consequences; Like Pol Pot rising to power Watergate Scandal • Ended the Vietnam war • Strengthened relationship between the Soviet Union and China which began the end of the Cold War • Created the Supplemental Security Income to provide money for aged, blind, and disabled. • He supported desegregation and felt that racism was America’s moral failure • Nixon endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment and Equal Employment Opportunity act

  9. “Considerate” We chose considerate because Richard Nixon focused his campaign entirely on his citizens. He displayed his charity by taking out the soldiers in Vietnam and creating many reforms that benefitted virtually everyone. Nixon’s foreign relations also made him such a favorable president. “A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is finished when he quits"

  10. Thoughts Nixon might have been able to control current conditions. He might have been able to find a solution and bring back troops from Iraq. Nixon showed that he was good with foreign relations and might have probably reached a deal where the Middle East might do something to stop the terrorists. That would make many people happy and, if he were to be elected right now, people would probably vote for him.
