  1. Warm-up Date 12/08/09 Pre-Section 5-2 Relations and Functions .2 Graph each point on a coordinate plane. .4 .3 .1 Evaluate each expression.

  2. Date 12/08/09 Sec 5-2 Relations and Functions

  3. Goal • To identify relations and functions • To evaluate functions

  4. ...And Why To determine whether a relation is a function, as in Examples 1 and 2

  5. Key Words Relation: Any set of ordered pairs. Function: A relation is a function if for every input there is exactly one output. Domain: In a function, the domain is all of the input values, or values of x. Range: In a function, the range is all of the output values, or values of y.

  6. Key Words Vertical-Line Test for Functions: A graph is a function if any vertical line intersects the graph at no more than one point. Function Notation: Use f(x) to indicate the outputs.

  7. range range domain domain Use a mapping diagram to determine whether each relation is a function. no yes

  8. Use the vertical-line test to determine whether each relation is a function. . . . .

  9. Make a table for each function. Use 1, 2, 3, and 4 for the domain.

  10. Find the range of the function rule f(g) = –2g + 4 for each domain. range:

  11. Did we achieve our goal? • To identify relations and functions • To evaluate functions
